I second this. Either get an old tool box or make one if you're feeling ambitious. Just flip the latch, open it up to get to your filler and whatever you want to stuff in the rest of the box. I'd divide the box just so spills don't get on the contents of the box too easily.

Edit: don't know how I missed the fact the filler is in the bed side. I'd still go with a tool box over a gas can to cover up the filler neck though. More useful.
