I don't know anything regarding your state laws on smog inspections and whatnot, but square bodies don't jazz me up like any earlier design. They're all over Craigslist, and if I were to want one, I'd certainly build it my own way. Pay special attention to any noises, electrical issues, and engine issues.

In my experience I've rarely seen a deal for a near complete vehicle get swapped for one that needs a lot of work, unless there was some underlying issue. More so in a dry state where rust isn't much of an issue.

Being a short fleet, you have the upper hand in this deal. Short square bodies don't have the value that your truck has. My brother bought a square for 2k, and I almost picked one up for 1500.
