I've used Brasso, or Silvo polish on chrome and had good results.
I've also used 0000 steel wool and windex on a GMC headlight bezels & grill and bumper that I eventually replaced.
Gotta be very gentle with the steel wool. It didn't appear to scratch the chrome, but it does nothing for the pits.
I wouldn't use steel wool on aluminum trim.
I've heard that applying wax after cleaning helps as a barrier between the metal and the elements to prevent or at least slow down the rust coming back.
I'm not telling you to go the steel wool route, just reporting my experience.
