Changing turbo 350 for 700r4 ??
I'm looking at swapping out my turbo 350 for a 700r4. What if anything is needed to make this possible. Tried the search but didn't find much.
Truck is a 67 with SB 350 Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Changing turbo 350 for 700r4 ??
You need to move the crossmember back approx 3 inches then the rear mount is close. There should be factory holes in the frame( I had to elongate the transmission mount hole to get the trans mount perfect) The driveshaft will have to be shortened. You need some sort of lockup kit for the converter but I just wired up the tranny so that it locks up in 4th gear and put a switch on it so that I could turn it off. It is a pretty easy swap.Those guys with smallblocks on 6cyl perches,if you use the V8 perches it moves the engine forward about the same as the differance in tranny length. Then your driveshaft "might " be OK. This swap is well worth the trouble.The truck is much nicer to drive. Oh and if your lucky and have a 9" tailstock on your turbo 350 the length is close to the same.

Re: Changing turbo 350 for 700r4 ??
Hi Chvy2NV;
Heres what I learned about it. 1992 and earlier versions of the 700R4 dont require a computer. Things you will need are as follows. Lockup kit that includes a Pressure switch, Inline fuse, and the wiring, you will also need an Adjustable vacuume switch and a Brake lever switch. You can get this stuff on Ebay and this will make it work correctly without a computer. If you want to just throw some money at it and get a kit then Early Classic Industries has a Overdrive Transmission conversion kit that will take care of it also. Good Luck. |

Re: Changing turbo 350 for 700r4 ??
you will also need the tv cable and bracket to hook to the carb. I used a lokar kit b/c my donor 700r4 had no brackets. I have no idea how to set up the tv cable, but everyone says it it very important and not to wing it. There is lots of info out there on this or I'm sure someone here can help. The guy who rebuilt my transmission came out and set it up before the truck even moved. He said he was tired of people burning out his perfectly good transmissions.
what rear end are you running? I have a 3.73, In fourth with the converter locked (lock is good for about 300 rpm) at sixty the rpms are just under 2k (28" tire) |
