What's wrong with this picture?
The gear indicator pointer just slides in but doesn't lock in, am I missing some type of retaining clip or something to hold it in place?

The groove on the bottom fits under the lens in the housing. You need to remove the housing to install the pointer.

Not sure I follow, are you talking about removing the (red arrow) housing or the (green arrow) housing? Please say green arrow!

Two screws remove the housing that the lens sits in. The one with the green arrow in your pic.

Look at the back of the P R N D D1 there is a slot between the column and the housing, the notch in the indicator travels in the slot.

And you might want to keep a spare, they will break if you look at the indicator wrong
 . I had a tilt wheel and I replaced mine 3 times.
