Wiring a kill switch

I've tried to search this out but no one gives a complete wiring description for a kill switch for an electric fuel pump. The switch I bought has two prongs on the back. I connected a positive wire to one then tapped into the positive wire on the fuel pump. Then I connected a negative wire to one and grounded it. But it didn't kill the fuel pump when I turned the ignition key to "ON". Also I put in a 20 amp inline fuse and the switch I'm using is a 10 amp. Any ideas on this? Is it hooked up wrong?
