454 700r4 combo...Anything I need to know??
Good Morning Gentlemen!!
I finally got ahold of the 454 from my little brother yesterday. It came wrapped in a 77 3/4 ton 4x4 GMC. The engine was the original engine my mom's old 83 1 ton 4x4... So basically I'm keeping it in the family. Anyways, I'm wanting to rebuild the motor, stock, maybe a new cam kit, intake and carb. So I gotta a couple of questions. What would be a good size cam for it. I want it to sound like it's got some testosterone (sp), without compromising reliablity. Also, what size carb is good for my engine, and also a recommendation on a good intake would be great. I've built a few SBC, but am new to the BBC's. ![]() Also, is there anything you guys could let me know to watch out for on this engine, and any tips on dropping it in my 70 suburban with a 700r4?? The 'burb is 2wd. Thanks for the help.

Sounds like a blast to drive. I would be pretty conservative on cam selection so as to keep it driveable and maximize low end power. I'd keep duration under 220 especially if this is a stock compression motor. Run a dual plane intake with a Q-jet. If you have an aversion to quadrajets a Holley 3310 750 vac. secondarys or 750 Eddy would also work well. I would put serious thought to replacing the original motor mounts with the 72 and later desighn. They hold the motor much more securely. I think there is a write up on here detailing the swap. You may want to replace your driveline and upgrade your carrier bearing to the beefier desighn if you have not done so already.
