Help with rear end
I currently have a 67 that is converted to 72 front disc brakes. The current rear end is a 12 bolt, not sure of the ratio. Here's the thing...the brakes in the drums do not sit all the way into the drums. I'm wondering if whom ever I bought the truck from put 5 lug axeles into a 6 lug rear end. Does this make sence to any one? I'm not familiar with rear ends so how do I identify what it is? What is the best way about fixing this problem? Thanks for you time!

Re: Help with rear end
If they swapped the axles from the 72 the axles are wider than the ones that belong in the 67. You should get new axles the correct length. I cant imagine the rear brakes are even working.

Re: Help with rear end
You can also make a spacer that fits behind the backing plate. Some grade 8 bolts of the proper length and you're ready to go.

Re: Help with rear end
They do work but you can only guess not very well. Ok Thanks for the feed back. I have never worked on one so I'm a little leary of doing so. Not sure what you mean by making spacers? Sorry I'm a little ignorent about this subject. It also leaks at the seal. It has a 283 motor with a 2 speed powerglide in it and it seems to me that the gear ratio is high? How common are these 72 5 lug, 12 bolt, 3:73 gears, set up for coil springs?

Re: Help with rear end
You still likely have the differential from a 67. The simply used the axles from a 72. Finding a used 12 bolt with 3.73 gears and 5 lug axles isn't going to be easy. The easiest thing would be to simply get a set of axles the correct length 5 lug. Swapping the axles is simple and you can change the seals and bearings at the same time. Most of the trucks in that era had a 3.07 gear. inline 6 trucks generally got the 3.73 and v8 had 3.07. Not sure about stuff with factory 283 though. New axles should be 120 a piece or so. You can get a pair of Moser axles for less than 300 bucks.

Re: Help with rear end
How do I go about figuring out the correct lenght? Or are all 5 lug same length.

Re: Help with rear end
The correct length axles for a '63 to early '70 truck 12 bolt is 30.5". No not all 5 x 5 wheel stud pattern axles are not the same length. The axles currently in your '67 housing are likely for a '71-'82 12 bolt which is 1.5" wider than the '63 to early 70 12 bolts. You will need a set of aftermarket conversion axles as there were not any factory 5 x 5" wheel stud axles the correct length for the '63 to early '70 housings.

Re: Help with rear end
I did a quick look and you search at summit for 12 bolt 8.875 truck axle you can get the correct length in 5 lug from a couple different sources.

Re: Help with rear end
I guess my problem is I have no idea what the heck im looking for. Is the one from summit not correct? Do you have any suggestion where I should look. I searched Jegs and did not see much but doesnt mean it wasn't there cause I'm not positive of what it needs.

Re: Help with rear end
The ones in the link are correct for your 67 and will convert to 5 lug. Order axle bearings and seals and take care of all your issues at one time.

Re: Help with rear end
You also need wheel studs because those axles do not come with them. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/rn...up?prefilter=1

Re: Help with rear end
So between watching Nascar and the Denver Donkeys, I found this...CLP -6569RACK rear axle conversation kit. I think this is it man. With out your help pointing me in the right direction I wouldn't of known where to start. Shall I use this CLP-6569ras Spider gear convertion. It is a good idea to change these out as well?
