Wheel offset

Is anybody running 17x8 rims on their 6 lug truck? Im looking at a set of 17x8 rims, but they have a +14MM Offset. Need to know the right offset for this size of rim for my truck.

you should be looking at about 4 1/2inch offset. the only thing i know about MM's is that they're in the candy isle

Yep, looking at my crusty trusty handy dandy conversion chart here. 14mm=.55118 or right close to almost 9/16".

This offset stuff confuses me too. An 8" wheel would actually be around 9" outside width right? The 8" is measured inside the lip?

The offset is measured to the very outside edge?

That offset sounds extreme, regardless of which way it goes. What were they on before, assuming they're used wheels?

Offset is from the center of the rim to the mounting surface. Backspacing is from the back edge of the rim to the wheel mounting surface. An 8 inch rim with a +14mm offset will have about 4 1/2" of backspacing. Actually the backspacing will be a little more, since backspacing is normally measured from the inside lip of the wheel, and the wheel width is measured inside where the beads seat. Positive offset pushes the wheel/tire farther into the wheel opening (more backspacing), negative offset makes it stick out (less backspacing).
