exhaust

I'm going to be bagging my 71' c10 longbed next month and I want to be able to drop it low. Thats the easier part. OK now the fun part. The exhaust. what would be the best idea's to run exhaust and still have dual exhaust, but now too obnoxious and anouying. i have a trailing arm with coil spring set up.

any ideas would be appreciated.

if your gonna drop it, make it LLOOWW

I had to chop mine off. Right now it's underneath which is annoying but this winter it's getting routed out the side in front of the rear tires. When I relocated the panhard bar and with my gas tank mounted in the spare tire well it wouldn't go over the rear end.
My truck is not bagged but lowered 4/6. I'd like to see if there's some ingenius way to do it but I can't see how without smashing it.

Just my .02

Here's how the exhaust was run on TrucksTV's project Copperhead...

I cut the holes in the trailing arm crossmember on mine, but put the mufflers under the front part of the bed just like Copperhead's and just put a turn down before the rear axle. The only part of the exhaust that is below the frame on mine is where it had to dip down to clear the stock transmission linkage. Right now I have a 4.5/6 drop with 26" tall front tires and my exhaust has never touched the ground, even when i scrape the s@#t out out my lower control arms by driving like an ass over rough roads!

Also Early Classic sells a trailing arm crossmember that already has the holes cut for the exhaust to run through it and it gives some added clearance by moving the driveshaft loop up a little.

Ok what about pics of what the stock exhaust is supposed to look like? I crawled under my truck today to find the leaks in my system. Well I found them, but I also found that the PO had run the pipes outside the frame starting underneath the cab. The back of the cab panels where it sits and curves over the top of the frame bent the sheetmetal 90 deg for clearance so I know that it not where it belongs. So is it inside the frame but lower than the crossmembers?

good question... I've never seen a factory exhaust, I'm too young. Every exhaust system that I've seen that wasn't obviously custom was below the frame rails though.

right now mine consists of Heddman Full-Length headers and 2.5" tubing that runs below the frame under the trailing-arm crossmember and then goes up to the mufflers under the bed (like copperhead) and finally exits through tailpipes on each side. I'm also running an Airbags with no drop spindles or c-notch and a 235/60/15 tire in front. With the system aired out, I'm about 1/2" or less from the header collectors from scraping the ground. However, I do plan on going lower this winter....so heres my solution...

I'm switching to the stock "Ramshorns" manifolds and plan on running the pipes down and then turbn outside the frame inbetween where the frame drops underneath the cab behind the rear suspension. Next it will run parallel to the frame with my mufflers mounted beneath the doors with a turndown. I've talked to a guy in town who is running this setup on a 71' LWB that is bagged AND bodydropped...so it seems like it will work for me.

Dynomax Headers Part #85118 for black or 86118 for ceramic coated fit our trucks pretty good, you need some minor clearancing on the passenger's side motor mount tower (the part bolted to the frame) to make them fit perfectly. They are a mid-length header that is a good alternative to the ram's horn manifolds. I have these on my truck and they give really good ground clearance.

Primered, if I were you I would keep the muffler out from under the cab... unless you're cab is insulated very well, the heat and noise from the mufflers will drive you crazy. just my $.02
