Yeah foggies get hot: the set i got on front of red is actually the second set; the first set had a faulty connection in one of the lights, so it sporatically worked. But the wire is welded, not saudered, WELDED, to the connecttion, and i don't got a welder so i took just the lights and brackets back, and wally world gave me a whole new set. So i got an extra lit switch, and a bunch of cool wiring.

Mike, i have heard it was illegal to not have them covered as the are meant for off road use only. but then again the title of this thread says fog lights.. thought nothing that i have seen look much like fog lights... look more like off road lights.. (KCs and such)....

I think he means in place of the turn signals inside on 83 up maybe? Or somewhere in that area.

It's illegal to cover any lights that came from the factory. I don't think this applies to additional lights, since many of those come with covers. Even some lights that came as a factory option have available covers.

Remember the old XKE Jaguar with the plexiglass covered headlights?
When the cars were imported over here, Jag had to lose the plexiglass covers or they were not legal and couldn't be sold.

To sum up.....what I meant was if you have DOT legal lights (legal for road use),
you cannot cover the lens with anything.
If you have "off-road" lights.....not legal for road use.....it doesn't matter what you cover them with as they are not legal anyway.
85tSilverado's pic above shows illegal lights. You cannot switch them on when going down a road unless you want to be pulled over. They are illegal for one or two reasons=they look like they put out more than 50 watts and they are covered by the grill of the truck.
You can put whatever lights you want on your truck as long as you don't cover them with anything and they are DOT legal.
The lens will have a DOT mark on it if it is legal.
This situation is like the metal stone guards for the square and round headlights you can buy from JCWhitney......not legal for road use. Good idea but illegal.
I would put aircraft landing lights on the front of my truck if I could, I don't for two reasons; 1. they are illegal and 2; my alternator couldn't handle it.

it may be illegal but i see many jeeps with stone guards over thier lights, also see Range Rovers and such with them. It may be one of those things that isnt paid much attention to. Its light the blackout light covers or any taillight cover for that matter. I made my own and never got pulled over.

No mike, thats not always true nationwide. In Louisiana, you can only run foglights if the weather is inclement; IE foggy or raining. I don't even think you can run them at night unless its inclement. But most cops won't pull you over for it, unless they are being a jerk.

In NJ no lights at all are allowed behing the grille.
I bought a truck with some extra running lights installed there and failed inspection for it

I guess I have just run into too many cops that were jerks......some of them REAL psychos.
I got pulled over for this many years ago (fog lights behind a grill of a Camaro) and the cop just wanted to hassle me.......he didn't really care about the lights.

It is a nice way to mount some lights but I just didn't want any of you folks to wind up on the side of the road.

Cliffsta, You be careful around where you live..........those Louisiana cops have a REAL bad rep.

heh heh heh, no kiddin. Luckily, Pineville isn't too big a city, but its still a city. My best friend's dad is a lieutenant, and my mom and dad know a bunch of cops. Kinda the old backwoods policy of who you know. But yeah, with this toast battery i only run the things when its nasty outside. When i change that battery though....

The lights I have are KC Slimlites long range (130W, off-road) lights.

The grill is billet, so I am not worried about melting the aluminum. :p

I can't believe that it would be illegal to mount "additional" lights behind the grill, especially off road lights (some of the police have lights behind their grilles).

Anyone know for sure in MO? I will have to check the MODOT or Highway Patrol website.

There is probably a acception in the law for the police to do it.
Those lights you mention are not legal to be turned on when you are on a road.......day or night.
I think it applies to all 50 states.
You can mount them behind the grill.......but you cannot turn them on.

The reason they are illegal is because thay might blind a oncoming driver.

That means phantom grilles are also illegal in most states, if not all too. CA is the most strict with this crap - no lights covered by anything anywhere ever. Big lights like that around here is just a cop magnet.
