Engine ID
Ok a search here did not turn up much. And a search on google did not turn up what I was looking for. What engines were stock on the 63 chevy trucks? What v-8s were stock on the 3/4 tons and how do I id them? I know it is very possible it has been replaced in 42 odd years, but I was curious what it came from the factory with. Would it be a 283? I figure that is the most likely, but I don't know that much about older chevy trucks.
I don't have the vin handy, which I know should tell me more certainly. But I figure if I have at least a rough idea what I am looking at then I can make some plans. |

Coltfan, the links JDL posted should help you identify what you have. As for what the truck could have came with, the engine options for the 1963 Chevy 1/2, 3/4 and 1 ton trucks were the 230 & 292 6cyl, and the 283 V8. The 327 came out in 1962 but was not offered in the pickups until 1966(some say late 1965). The big trucks(2 ton up) were available with both sixes and the 283, 327, 348 and 409 V8's. Hope this helps.
