rear end rebuild

i was driving my truck tonight and the rear end started whining and squealing and about 2 miles later it started poping and grinding. im guessing that when the bearings went out it took out the gears too. what is the cheapest place to get good quality parts to rebuild it and the approximate cost? its a 12 bolt rear end

About 10 years ago that happened on my '67 K/10 suburban. I spent about a grand. I needed new axles [Moser] but my gears were OK. While it was apart I got a rebuild kit for the whole differential [seals and bearings] and a posi unit [Auburn]. I took my parts to a differential specialty shop and they put it together in a day.
If you don't want to rebuild your own diff, maybe one from a salvage yard might work. I wanted to be sure of my mechanical works so I rebuilt.

Most salvage yards will sell a complete rear assembly for around $100. I have a perfect 6 lug rear out of a 70 truck that I will sell for $100. So, if you decide to buy used, make sure you know the gear ratio of the old one in your truck and match it if that works for you. Rebuilding one with new parts will cost way more---just the bearing kit can run up there and with metal flying all over in the gears, they too will probably be kaka. Might do a "wanted to buy" on the parts board and go for a posi with a guarantee to perform----that way you upgrade at the same time.

only problem with getting a cheap replacement is it's lifespan will be short with your engine combo/ i'd spend the money on new heavy duty posi type stuff and have it pro-built $1000-$1200

DTS here in town gets about $1,000 to completely rebuild your bare axle housing. That includes new non-posi gear set, axles, bearings, seals, assembly.

If you provide the gears, the price goes down to $550 or so.

I ordered my stuff from this outfit that sells on Ebay. Very good deal, they beat all other places I checked by at least $50. For $586 shipped to my door I got the kit, new Eaton Posi, 3.42 gears, install kit. Shipped fast and good customer service.

From what I hear the gear installation is crucial. Must be level, etc. Very tight tolerances.

got the axle out and torn apart and its trashed. the left side carrier bearing came apart and the differential shifted to that side chewing up the side of the case and the side of the differentia.l it bent the end of the right axle and the bearing pieces chipped up the gear teeth. all that was left of the bearing was a tiny strip of metal and half of the rollers which came when i drained the oil and there was about 2 handfulls of metal powder in the bottom of the case. hopefully i will be able to find an axle locally tomorrow to rebuild and get the truck back together so i have something to drive.

I got my differential rebuild kit from Merle's Auto Parts (local), my posi from Pro Gear in San Diego [619/ 571-1158] and new axles from Moser,
www.moserengineering.com
I could not get OEM GM axles from the Chevy dealer at the time (c. 1995), they said they were no longer available and out of stock, but I think that the GM axle plant(?) was experiencing a labor strike at the time. I have no complaint about the Moser axles.
