What is the best way to ship a grill, it is actually a upper and lower grill for a 1968 impala. i was thinking about boxes used for the fluoresant bulbs. something to keep the thing from getting bent. thanks for your help..

I've ship lots of oddball shaped car parts, and lots of times end of fabbing boxes together. Be sure to put plenty of padding, especially on corners. To stiffen up the sides you can cut strips of cardboard the same width as your box and bend them a few times into z shapes. sort of like theway they put spacers in pizza boxes to keep from flattening your pie. Bubble wrap is great, but gets expensive. Old newspaper works if you seperate the pages and crumble the sheets to put extra air in. collecting insurance from the post office is a PIA, but UPS pays quick and easy. Both are cheap protection. UPS is free to $100 and you have to ask for it if you want more. My .02

Vinyl siding boxes work good. They are heavy cardboard and plenty long. Check with local roofing/sidng supplier.

I usually get some cardboard and fab the box. For some stuff I have even beefed up the boxes with 1/8 inch plywood before so it couldn't get bent. That gets heavy though.

Whatever you do, Don't ship Fedex ground (they aren't real fedex employees - they're contracted laborers and tend to beat the crap out of my packages) and always, always, always ask the shipping depot to put FRAGILE stickers on the outside of the package.

I recently had to ship a steel rollpan for an '99+ Silverado/Sierra (big) to someone here on the forums. It got there without problems. I made my own box out of a thick cardboard and lined all sides with 1" thick styrofoam. Wrapped the rollpan in a protective sleeve of bubblewrap type stuff. Made it without problems.

I usually ship UPS. Sometimes they charge "Rural delivery" fees for some people here on the forum and they also charge and extra $5 for oversized packages, but they insure up to $100 I have yet to file for them to pay for damage.

I've Been Using Fed Ex For A Number Of Years Without A Single Claim Or Problem. They Are Cheaper & Faster Than Ups Or Usps. The First $100 Of Insurance & A Tracking # Is Free. As With Any Shipper You Have To Idiot-proof The Package, By Padding & Wrapping It Really Well. John

Let me clarify again just so nobody misunderstands what I'm saying.

I've never had problems with FedEx specifically - only FedEx GROUND. There's a difference between the two.

Maybe it's just the delivery people here in Atlanta. I've had three packages in 4 months get here annihilated and I've had to file claims to get insurance to pay for them. One was a $600 piece of art that was 12"x12"x2" and double-wrapped in the large bubble bubble wrap, then stuffed in a box with styrofoam packing peanuts all around it and Fragile on both long sides of the package. The box was pre-fab, designed for this piece and I've gotten things from the shipper via USPS before, so I know they pack well.

UPS also insures the first $100. If I had my choice, I'd ship DHL, all my international deliveries go DHL and those guys rock socks. UPS also will send you and the recipient update notifications via email for free, you just gotta give them the recipient's email when you ship the package. You can also print labels out online with them.

US Postal Service has a deal $7.50 to ship anywhere in the continental USA, as much as you can stuff in their envelope. You'll need to go to your local post office for more info.

I didn't read the other responses though using a triangular (three sides + two ends) shaped bow will wotk very well for stiffness.

i agree on dhl i have an account with them there prices are awesome and they always ship fast never an issue with damaged packages

I had a bad experiance with the outer grill for my 69. I finally got it on the 3rd time they shipped it, the first two were bent real bad and the 3rd one was also bent but I managed to staighten it myself. All they did (Chevyduty) was put it in a large bubble wrap envelope & put it in a cardboard box. It was shipped by UPS however I can't blame them as the vendor should of used a much better boxing system with styrafoam (sp?) or heavyduty carboard as mentioned. It did have a long ride though, from SE USA to NW Canada. Doug
