Gas Tank Advice Needed - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Well, Im told the source of my problems is a rusting gas tank. My tank is in the cab, and it is going to stay there. So, now I have 3 options:
1 - Have the tank dipped and sealed by the radiator guys
2 - Buy a new tank for $200
3 - Buy a good used tank for less.

What would you do?

History: I had this same tank dipped and sealed 10 years ago, it worked fine for 10 years, but I wonder if the problem will just come back? I could get a used one but Im a little affraid that it would develop rust too. So, that leaves a new one - anyone used one of the repop galv tanks that all the suppliers sell?

I'd find a usd one that is pretty clean, skip the dipping, and have it steam cleaned. The heat/water pressure will remove the rust, without causing any dammage to the rest of the tank like dipping does. Then apply a sealer like POR or some other brand. (this is how our in house rad shop fixes fuel tanks)

DO NOT BUY A NEW REPOP!!! Reseal your old one or find a good used one and have it cleaned. I bought a new tank. First didn't fit at all, second one I had to bend the filler neck just to get the bolt holes to line up and it still doesn't fit right.

Total PITA!

I see you put it in a 68? I wonder if they fit any better on a 71. I asked Brothers after I read your post and they said they sell tons of them with no returns. But then again, I didnt think they would say that their own stuff was crap - even if it is.....

Just know that the repop's cover many years and models. I bought a new Blazer/sub tank and the problem is that they were not the same, so it fit neither very well. As for the behind the seat tanks, just look, there are enough people pulling them out in lou of Blazer tanks, you'll probably score one for shipping cost.

what is the difference between the 71-72 and the rest? As far as I can tell, the newer ones just use a different fuel sending unit - with two outlets.

i had my tank steamed at a radiator shop and lined it myself with Red-Kote.

I just read something that tells me I might need to go with a new one anyway. Most of the liners out there, like red-kote, disolve in acetone. And some gas companies are starting to put acetone in the gas. I wonder if that is what made my tank rust again. Since it was already cleaned and lined once.

I have one good tank, and I have two trucks that I am picking up this weekend, don't know the condition of those tanks yet, but you can have the good one for $20. Where in the Bay are you?

The difference between the 67-70 and 71-72 tanks is the earlier ones used a vented gas cap. The 71-72 tanks used a vent tube on the filler neck. Mine was made for the 67-70's. The filler neck was just stuck in and saudered without being checked for quality. I stood my original tank next to the new one and I could tell a big difference between the angle of the neck. I had to stick a shovel handle in the neck and bend it back and it still isn't straight. I didn't want to bend it much further in fear of breaking the sauder weld. I think I broke it any way because it smells like gas if I drive on a bumpy or curvy road or if I fill it up past 3/4 tank.
