Brake Job on My '67 Shortstep
I plan on doing a complete brake job on my 67 Shortstep. I have the original 6 lug drum setup front & rear. I just recently aquired the truck & was told that it had been sitting up a while. I'm assuming that it currently has DOT 3 fluid in the system now, but it looks pretty funky. If I replace all 4 wheel cylinders, blow all the brake lines clear, & empty the master cylinder, will it hurt anything to go back with silicone brake fluid? Are there any advantages to using silicone brake fluid vs. DOT 3 fluid? Or do I need to just stick with the DOT 3?

silicone brake fluid is desinged for todays vehicles higher temp. braking systems. it WILL work in older applications, for the price, i still use dot3. from Andyman1-cert. ASE brake tech.

Thanks andyman....This truck is for my son to drive back & forth to school, so I was just thinking that the silicone fluid would make the brake system 'er'...Just didnt know if its too much sugar for a dime...

also just draining the MC and blowing out the lines will NOT get all the old fluid and "crud" out. it will mix with the silicone & create havoc.

So the best thing overall to do would be empty the system as much as possible & go back with DOT3, right?

The advantage of silicone is that it's not hydroscopic. That is, it does not absorb moisture from the atmosphere. That makes it ideal for infrequently driven vehicles too.
