Question on Brake ID
I own a 1983 Chevy C10 pickup with a 6.2 diesel and need to know how to ID the brake system that is in ita As right now I do not have any brakes that work. Every part store that I go to ask me what brake system I have. They say there is a tag in the engine compartment or on the glove box door that tells you. I can not find any tag or information anywhere that says which system I have. I do know that I have a Hydro Booster on it and so I am turning to you folks for help. Thank You in advance for the help. Scot

Re: Question on Brake ID
Sytar 69,
Most parts stores will go by the RPO code. It's on the glove box and for '87 anyway, begins with a "J". When I ordered brakes for my 1987, I just told them "1987 GMC 1500 4x4 with JB5 brakes" and they gave me exactly what I needed...they even gave me the jobber price just because I knew what I was talking about! Here are the RPO codes for GM Trucks...I think they pretty much cover all the years that style was built...but it should get you closer to an answer...you can always google "GM RPO CODES"... Hope these help... Re: Question on Brake ID
Sierra, my problem is that I do not have the sticker anywhere on the truck. I looked in,on the glove box, and I looked everywhere in the engine compartment and nothing is there anywhere. Could the title or the VIN tell me anything? Scot

Re: Question on Brake ID
Pull the wheel off and measure the rotor. There are only 2 options. Standard (1" thick rotor) or Heavy Duty (1.25" rotor)
Being a Diesel with Hydroboost, I am betting it is HD...

Re: Question on Brake ID
So would that be a JB5,JD3,JD5 or JB1 ,JB3. The first three are together on the part store web site and the other two are together, I think the first three are the heavy duty system. I am going to replace the whole system from front to back and need to figure out which system I have as I live 65 miles from the closest part store.

Re: Question on Brake ID
I found this chart to help with physical ID if the sticker is gone...
GM LIGHT-DUTY GM Light Duty Truck Brake Options: 1984 and later. Brake system replacement parts for GM light duty vehicles depends on which production option is installed on the truck. Either one of two methods can be used to determine which option applies: Method 1: The service parts identification label (SPIL) lists what options are on the truck. The physical location varies by series: - C, K, R, S, T, V Series: The SPIL is located on the inner surface of the glove compartment door or on the left front inner fender skirt. - G Series: Inner surface of the hood panel. - M Series: Inner surface of the glove compartment door. - P Series: Not adhered to the truck at the factory, but mailed to the dealer. If possible, contact dealer for placement. Method 2: Physical examination using the following specifications: Engine Front Rotor Rr Drum/Rotor Power Booster Production # Gas 11.86" x 1.28" 11 x 2" None JB1 Gas 11.86" x 1.28" 11 x 2" 9.5" Single Diaphragm JB3 Gas 11.86" x 1.28" 11.15" x 2.75" 9.5" x 8" Dual Diaphragm JB5 Gas 12.5" x 1.28" 11.15" x 2.75" 9.5" x 8" Dual Diaphragm JB6 Gas 12.5" x 1.28" 13" x 2.50" 9.5" x 8" Dual Diaphragm JB7 Gas & Diesel 12.5" x 1.53" 13" x 2.50" Hydro-boost JB8 Gas 14.25" x 1.53" 15" x 4" Hydro-boost JB9 Diesel 11.86" x 1.28" 11" x 2" Hydro-boost JD3 Diesel 11.86" x 1.28" 11.15" x 2.75" Hydro-boost JD5 Diesel 12.5" x 1.28" 11.15" x 2.75" Hydro-boost JD6 Diesel 12.5" x 1.28" 13" x 2.50" Hydro-boost JD7 Gas & Diesel 14.25" x 1.53" 13.75" x 1.53" Hydro-boost JF9 (4 wheel disc) Here's the link.
