custom chassis w IRS

here's my little project. '67 Shortbed with an 8.8-inch Ford Expedition IRS. the rear cycles 16-inches of travel with the axles in place. Its narrowed 5-inches to fit 22x10 inch wheels tucked in the bed. Front is a Scotts Hot Rod IFS that cycles 12-inches with some small modifications.

Hoopty has another fan! That is a nice set-up. Who's work/design... yours? Can't wait to see more.

the design is a collaborative effort between Orange County Auto Shop's Mike Kim and myself. This shop cranks out some amazing off-road and show vehicles and uses CAD programs heavily to design suspensions. Most of the rear mounts were designed in CAD, lazer cut and then dimple die'd. Everything else has been fabricated using a band saw, mill, lathe etc.

If you read the post that Mike linked to you will get the scoop. That was a 69 that got stolen. This one started life as a 67...

N2 is correct. i did have a '69 swb that i had been building slowly over the course of a few years. it was stolen in january and i picked the '67 up to replace it. The '69 was at about the same point build-wise as my '67 is now. Having your truck ripped off is a pretty big motivator. I've gotten more done in the last two months with the new truck that i ever did on the old one.

I should have read the whole thread on Street Source, but being the typical male I just looked at all the pretty pictures. LOL! Sorry to hear about your loss HOOPTY. I wouldn't have the energy or enthusiasm to do another one if my truck got ripped off. Kudos to ya. Truck is looking killer!

i do the same. pics are always more fun than words.

As for the theft, i had actually found it hard to stay motivated to finish the '69 for a variety of reasons-lack of shop space for one. It was stolen right as i was moving my stuff into a new shop so it really sucked to be all ready to work and then not have anything to work on. So the '67 is getting built quickly because i want to hurry up and cruise it. lol

Re: custom chassis w IRS

Well, best of luck to you. If it finishes up with the same quality as you have it started with, it'll be absolutely stunning. Right now my motivation is only limited by my skills. Just bought a Lincoln Pro-Mig 140 and so I'm going to teach myself how to weld. Going to the scrapyard this week to get some pieces to start practicing with. Bags should be here tomorrow so things are starting to move. Only problem is after those are in my next step is all the sheetmetal work, shaving, etc. and I don't wanna start that until after Slamfest in October. I guess I'll have plenty of welding practice by then and it should be a breeze.

Keep the progress pics coming! Can't wait to see that truck draggin!

sounds like you're properly motivated. that's exactly how i got started. just went out and bought a welder, read a book, and started welding scrap together. My first welder was a pos that i bought at Costco. lol

Is that Scotts Hot Rod in Ventura County? Did they do the install?

Re: custom chassis w IRS

Nice work!!!! I have one question. Do you have issues with the rear suspension moving inward and outward through the range of travel? When you lift the frame from all the way down do the wheels want to move outward?
Thanks

Re: custom chassis w IRS

the wheels do move inward and outward during travel just like an IFS. We used two parameters to determine how to set the suspension up for my needs. First, i wanted the truck to lay flat and the wheels to tuck so we narrowed the axles to allow the wheels to tuck in the bedsides (the bedsides taper in a great deal the further up the wheel tucks) but we also kept enough length to keep the axles from binding. The arms are parallel to the ground at ride height.

the sucking-in condition is inevitable as the track width gets about 1.5-inches narrower at full bump and full droop. It looks odd when the truck is laid out not so much because the wheels have a couple degrees of negative camber, but because they are about two inches away from the wheelwheel openings. At ride height the wheels are pushed out where it looks like a normal truck though.

I also had the same issue with my front suspension but I soon found out that once you get everything back together that movement creates large amounts of stress on the balljoints. Especially when your running 285/35-22. "Wide tread patch" So I changed up the front end so the movement isn't an issue anymore but like you said I have negative camber. I just wanted to see if you had the same issue because your running the same wheel size. One more question. With this movement are you going to have to run a slip yoke on your half shafts? I've never looked at an irs from an Expedition so I'm not sure how they are setup.

Thanks

the ball joints are definately an issue. The way my crossmember was designed the truck would not lay out on 22's because the ball joints locked up. We clearanced them to get the truck to lay down and are building new upper a-arms with sperical bearings (uniballs) that will be bulletproof.

Not sure about a slip yoke yet. We are going to finish cycling the rear suspension today to determine the amound of plunge the axles need and then order axles. The stock CV's will likely do the job. Ill let you know what we find out though. Oh yeah, you are running a larger tire than i am. Mine are 28-inches in diameter, which makes the build easier, but i'll have to worry about bending rims. running 30 series tires up front and 25 series tires out back.

Thanks for the info. I also used a scotts front end but by the time I was finished with it I should have just built one. I had to make new upper and lower arms, relocate the R&P and change the location of the upper control arms. Then I converted over a set of C-10 spindles to work with the mustang II balljoints, so I can run the bigger components.

Thanks again for the info.
