windshield rust repair

I removed the glass in my blazer this morning, and quite a bit of the windshield frame fell out with it. Does anyone make a patch? I also pulled the glass in one of the truck cabs I have, and for the most part it seems to be the same shape. Has any one chopped up a truck for this repair? I appreciate any suggestion.

the truck should make a good donor for repair if its just the area around the glass.

Is the rot at the base of the windshield in the cowl area or are the side pillars and top area shot. If the rot is at the base you will have to make the patches yourself. If the top or sides of the frame are shot a donor truck is pretty much your only option. Rusted windshield frames on these, at least in the salt states, is a very common occurance. They look scary to replace but they are not that bad as long as you have a mig welder and make a jig to ensure the new frame ends up in the right spot.

its omly at the top, and mostly the inside of the frame, not so much the outsid where the glass actually sits.

I bet if you really start looking the frame is rusted well down the posts. You can tell by removing the weather stripping along the post. If the spot welded seam of the post is rusted its replacement time. Good windshield frames can be had in the 2 to 3 hundred dollar range but get one from outside the rust belt. I replaced the frame on my 72 and it wasn't that bad. Before you cut your frame make a wooden jig which fits inside your windshield opening. This really helps to make sure you cut the new frame to the correct dimensions. Raise the fiberclass cap about 3 to 4 inches and block it off the bed rails. Reference and mark onto the fiberglass cap the top of the existing frame with a plumb bob or make somthing to ensure the angle of the new frame is exactly the same as the old one.
