looking for intake suggestions on 454

I posted in the other thread i started that i bought a 454. Well its from a 95 chev TBI, im ditching the TBI as suggested by many, and going with a carb.

I need an intake and carb, and i am not planning on makeing this a race engine by any means, but i would like to get as much as possible out of the midrange as i can with out cracking this engine open.

i was thinking of just getting an edelbrock carb/intake, like a 750 and a dual plain intake. anyone with experience with these parts or anyone have recomendations?

EDIT: also, after searching, i found the engine produces somewhere around 290HP and 410TQ stock.

edelbrock dual plain intakes are great. if your not going to use a nice qjet carb. use a edelbrock carb. if it were me i would try to stay away from a holley unless you like messing with them alot.

sounds like a great plan you got..gett'er done

Re: looking for intake suggestions on 454

I would go with the edlebrock performer RPM intake, and a 750 carb...providing your truck requires no emission testing

This will give you excellent mid range, and really good torque down low. Follow this up with a edlebrock cam, and lifter set, and maybe heads. You have a 454, so you have lots of down low torque, so just work on the mid range.

I would buy the carb, intake, cam, and lifters from one manufacturer, so you know all the parts will compliment each other properly, and match up.

Thanks
Duro

A good replacment for your TBI intake would be Weiand stealth or Edelbrock RPM. The carb choice is all up to you. A Holley is a much better carb but to each thier own.

Re: looking for intake suggestions on 454

since its an otherwise stock 454 I would use a regular Performer intake, not the RPM style. My first choice for a carb would be a good Q-jet. my second choice would be a Holley 750 Vac. Sec. or Demon Vac. sec.
Ive had a 770 CFM Holley on my truck for almost 4 years now....I never mess with it, infact I didnt take the air cleaner off since last March when I put a new filter in it.

Re: looking for intake suggestions on 454

how much should i expect to spend on an intake and carb set-up?

sorry guys, im a EFI guy. I have 8 55lb injectors in my camaro, and i understand how and why they work, but a carb is like an ancient inventors work of art that seems very fragile and brittle and i dont want to touch IT! so whatever carb i buy, i want to bolt it on and start the truck. is that practicle or not?

what Qjet should i look for? and where? hahahah, im such a newb!

My first thoughts are, "why would he want to switch to a carb " ?
a good stock replacement q-jet would normally be fine, but a Q-jet from Edelbrock or Jet or some of the other performance suppliers may work a little better yet.

Re: looking for intake suggestions on 454

if it has peanut port heads, the best manifold is the Wieand for those heads. I put one on mine witha 650 spreadbore holley with electric choke and it is great. If I had a Q-jet when I did this, I would have used it simply because they are great carbs, but the holley works fine. The TBI was not condusive to power. the engine really woke up with the carb swap
