Swap my car

Some ideas are jumping on my mind….And make me crazy….
What I own is a chevy custom deluxe 30, 2wd with L6 3.5L and manual transmission of 4 speeds the first one is the low gear

1. One of the ideas is to swap my truck to 5.0L with 5 speed Automatic transmission and 4x4, this will cast me a lot of money

2. The second one is to keep the L6 engine and install a bigger carburetor; mine now is Rochester monojet; and to swap to 5 speed automatic transmission with 4x4.

I really need help especially for the second idea can I do that…If so what do I need parts, I need a mechanical experience

P.S I drive my truck everyday, so bare in mind fuel consumption

Re: Swap my car

Hey man!

If you want to switch from 2wd to 4x4, you'd be best off to try and find a 4x4 pickup to do the swap with. All of the different components cost money over here, buying them individually over there would be even more costly. I know that might be pretty tough in Jordan, but maybe you can find a wrecked US Military 1.5 ton CUVC somewhere?

As far as the engine swap goes, you will need to move the engine mount plates on the frame, and get the proper mounts for the small block. I'd look into a 5.7L if you can, as you will get better power, and probally better economy from it as well.

I would personally stay away from the 5 speed automatic. Those 700r4s are not known for their durability, and I cannot imagine they are very common to find in the first place over there. I'd stick with the SM465 4 speed standard you have now, and have a 4x4 output shaft shipped to you. You'd still need to find an adapter and transfercase as well. A CUCV would have a 3 speed automatic called a TH400, and an NP208 transfercase. The TH400 is a very tough transmission, NP208 is pretty strong too.

Psst---Russ, last I checked, a 700r4 has always been a 4-speed auto. Outside of the first Allision 1000's GM hasn't put a 5speed auto in trucks.

Being in Jordan, I'd have to think the pickings might be a bit slim. Russ's idea of looking for an EX-US Military CUCV might be your best bet. Rather than swapping parts over, I'd just run the CUCV instead. Might have to regear it though if you want better mileage out of the 6.2L Diesel. CUCV trucks have 4.56 gearing, which is great for power, not so great on mileage. (not to mention the possible target it might make for un-friendlies driving what looks to be a US military truck)

Re: Swap my car

Well, if 305s (5.0L), and 4x4 700r4s are common in your area, midaswell go for the swap then!

Clifford does make a 4 barrel intake for the Chevy I6s, sometimes you see them online, such as in this ebay auction:

Re: Swap my car

hehe, thanks for correcting me on that, I should know better by now...

Well, if you think about it, it could be a 5 speed, with the lockup converter being considered a gear of some sort...
