Stroker 396?
Hello.
Does anyone know what I can do with a 396 to get some more cubes? What kind of stroker combinations are available and what are your opinions? I had thought about sticking a 454 crate motor in place of my 396 but I've decided that it would be cooler to do something with what I have in place already. Thanks..... Josh

454 crank and 396 block but pistons will be custom and expensive. A 396 crank and 454 block. The 396 uses the same crank as a 427 and the 427 and 454 have the same block. Score your self a 454 block and build the 427. I picked up a 69 passenger car 427 for my truck. Summit has a forged piston overhaul kit for less than $600. Another option is just punch the 396 and build a 402. A good running 402 will be a blast in the truck. Another advantage with the 427 is it is internally balanced so you won't have to get another balancer or flexplate/flywheel. The 454 HO is a smokin' deal though. 500# ft of torque and 8.5;1 compression. Hydraulic roller cam, forged pistons, steel crank, 4 bolt block and a 1 year warranty. If you have the $ up front, that's what I would do. I'm broke...

Thanks mike.
I like the idea of a crate motor 454 equally as much as building one. My experience with building the last two small blocks (383 + 406) had their fair share of trying moments (had a defective ring land in a KB piston). It might be nice to just buy one ready to run.
