2004R transmission
Looking at the 2004r from bowtie overdrive. Wandering if any of you guys out
there are running this type of transmission and what you think?

They say this is a great tranny if you have 3:73 gears. I was gonna use a 2004R until I got a great deal for my 700R4 that I couldn't pass up.

A ton. I was running a TH400 with a 2400 stall and I would be turning something around 3500 @ 55-60 mph. Now it is somewhere around 1800-2000 @ 55-60 and I think around 2200-2500 @ 70mph. I haven't drove it in a while so I am not sure how close my numbers are. The only thing now is it is really easy to smoke the tires.

I had a straight six, 3 speed manual, 3.73 rear and I was spinning about 3500 at 60 mph. I swapped a 350 and 700R4 and it's only about 1800 RPM at 60 mph in OD. I can do 75 at about 22-2300 rpm. Didn't see a big mpg improvement (about 11 with old set-up to 13 city/mix). I can squeeze 15-16 out of it on the hwy, but I don't get to drive without hitting a stoplight for very long around here

this is funny right now i'm in the process of looking for a 700r4 and been looking for some feedback on the different trans's but it sounds like everyone is happy w/ their 700. now all's thats left is to find one.

Well and yall can correct me but from what i read with the 2004r it is supposedly the same size as the turbo 350 so all you may need to move is the crossmember and you can keep your existing drive shaft. There supposed to be pretty durable, shift smoother than the 700r4, and have a higher o.d. gear?????????????

Try and find one out of a vette or get one rebuilt with corvette internals and servo. They can use a different stronger basket that lets them use an additional clutch disc and less prone to breakage. There are a couple other things they can do to beef up the tranny so ask around if you get one rebuilt. The guy that did mine is known around here for building some bulletproof racing trannys and I am very happy with mine.

I think the 200 and 700 both use a .7 to 1 ratio, or a 30% reduction in gearing. I think the 4L60E's a .67 to 1 or 33%. Been a while since I looked, but I think those are correct.
Either way, 30 or 33% in an old truck isn't much of a difference, your tire choices would have more of an affect on mpg than 3% more OD.

the bonus to 200r4 is the ability to have full throttle in overdrive. A 700 will not unless you modify them. If a 200 can handle a Grand National, they will handle yours as long as you dont pull heavy loads

Cooters you are dead on about the 700 not wanting to stay in OD at full throttle. I found out the hard way and luckily I only turned it about 5500 when I found out....

Every GM automatic OD vehicle I've ever driven (and it's been a lot of them) drops to 3rd under WOT conditions.

I have a 2004r from a 86 monte ss. I going to mod some of the internals soon to see how much more I can get out of it. Its supposed to have a lower first then a 700 for a better launch. The monte ss's came with 3.73 rears but had smaller tires. I put it in at the same time as my new rear I when from a th350 and a 3.08 gear to the 2004r with a 3.73 gear, without lockup on the highway was almost the same rpm. With lockup a little lower. Only have to move the crossmember the holes are the the driveshaft fits. Hope this rambling helps

B&M makes a wide open throttle kit for the 700, its an easy install. A t 350 and 400 will stay in 3rd as long as you are going fast enough. My friend has a mega hp grand national and with some mods, the tranny is good but now he is going to a 4l80 instead.
