Re: cheapest rear mounted gas tank

$25 junkyard find. This probably won't work on 63-66, but it work great on our 62 (which has a wider frame).
I found a '85 or Suburban in the junk yard. Had the 34 gallon tank, straps, sending unit. I bought the whole thing (including 1/4 tank of stale gas) for $25.
We took out the cross member just behind the axle and built a new one for the rear of the frame. We bolted hook the tank straps the to crossmember that is over the axle and to the new rear crossmember. Hooked the fuel line to the vent on the sender. Used another hose to hook the output and input lines from the elc pump to each other, effectively closing thos ports off. Works like a champ.
Also put in a 0 - 90 gauge and hooked to the sending unit.

Re: cheapest rear mounted gas tank

I just don't want the gas smell in the cab,and it gives me more options for my stereo. also provides a little more traction in the rear end.

The tanks out of late 70's to early 80's Chevy vans work great. They fit perfect between the framrails. I welded a piece of 3X2 angle on the end of the frame rails and gusseted it on the sides drilled holes in it for the straps Hole sawed through the side of the frame then used the gas fill tube from the van inverted and cut a little bit off one end coupled it to a 88-98 Chevrolet Pickup fuel door and hardware. I also made a sheet metal kickout inside the bed to hide the fill tube. Looks great.Name: bedsidefuelfill.jpg
