LMC rear mount gas tank?

hey guys I know this is probably a stupid question, I bought a 60-66 rear mount gas tank from LMC the brackets that came with it don't make sense to me, I know there is some modification going on but does anyone have any pics to give me a heads up on how I should mount it?

trying to help my neighbor put a rear tank in his 64 stepside, and he ordered the LMC 'kit' which arrived yesterday.

1: the tank hits the stepside bed rear crossmember... about 1/2 of the crossmember would need to be cut away for it to fit against the frame so the locating tabs would fit into the existing holes...
or the tank would need to be sectioned
or the tank would need to have the top channeled to fit around that xmember.


2; the straps are flat out WRONG. got two J shaped straps. each one had the tabs bent the opposite of the other... SO if it were a J on one the tabs would face the inside radius, and on the other they are bent opposite the radius... and they are short enough that you would HAVE to use them fore and aft, not left to right.

The inlet would probably still interfere with the framerail

And it was bent on one corner in shipping because it was just in a single layer cardboard box..

I didn't know this was going to require a plasma cutter, a welder and fabbing new xmembers and c notching the frame to make it fit... some fabrication doesn't mean re-engineer the frame from the axle back... at least not to me.

he is now fighting with LMC to get his money back so he can just buy the OEM behind the seat tank.

Would definately NOT recommend you ever buy this unless you are building a frame dragger or are up to modding building everything that needs to be done to use it.

Do you have a picture of the tank?
I installed a rear mount poly tank last year, and if it is the same style, I may be able to help you out.

yea greg here is a pic, raining outside or I would've taken out there and took a pic on the truck where I planned on mounting it.

You have a similar tank to mine.

There is a tech article at Brothers website that covers this instalation.

You will need to remove the spare tire channel as well as trim the crossmember that is in the area of the tank. I took mine out and cut the sides off the channel and was essentially left with a flat bar between the frame rails.

thank you very much... I spent 4 hours+ on yahoo search looking for ANYTHING related to this tank... which is how I found this site and truck'n's post.

I don;t think he is up for cutting the bed crossmember as it will still be a worktruck, and I'm not sure he is willing to have a new rear xmember installed to have someway of using the supplied gas tank straps... (they have to go fore and aft).
I hope he can swap for the in cab unit at this point... I knew it looked remarkably similar to a blazer tank, as opposed to a semi custom purpose built tank.

I'm not up for doing it (not a welder, nor do i have the tools for tubing work), and I just changed the entire drivetrain out in my Wagon so I owe time indoors to the family.

Here are some pictures of a late 70's early 80's 1/2 ton van tank that I used. I welded a 3X2 angle to the end of the frame rails and gusseted the sides. Drilled the angle, trimmed and slotted the front cross member for the strap mounts. On the third and fifth pic you can see how the front straps mount, they are a U shaped hook with a sheet metal screw to secure them, and how the cross member was trimmed. Also in the forth pic you can see where I hole sawed through the frame and the fuel fill hose. Good Luck
