1982 fuel pump mix up ?? need help

got a 1982 GMC 5.0...went to parts store to get a new fuel pump...the one on their systom dosent mach the one that i took off...it {the one on their systom}has a much shorter cannister...i was told the one i had was off of a 400 block...had truck for 12yrs...could it be the previous owner put this pump on???...or is there another reason it was on my truck from factory...i installed the pump matching up to the one that came off & it broke in 30sec. need some feedback on this......tks

The only difference I am aware of is the SBC pumps have an inlet and outlet, the later pumps have inlet, outlet, and vent. If the outlets are correct and the pushrod is correct I wouldn't think the height of the pump body would matter.

All SB used the same fuel pumps. Differences were ports.
How did the pump fail? Was the push rod installed properly? How many ports on the fuel pump you removed?

i am assuming the diafram went bad...on further inspection i noticed the arm comming out of the new fuel pump that broke in 30sec. is slightly longer than the orig pump...i also found a number stamped on orig pump that parts store crossed reff. and it came up on their systom & will be picking up today...pump has 3 ports...but still cant figure out why the pump that came off truck is different than the one that parts stores systoms show...being that the cannister is over twice as long...will find out today what the new part goes on...one guy told me its for a 400 block

the orig unit has 3 ports...in..out...& the 3rd im assuming a vent line...could there be a diff. in rate of flow ???

HD. The 3rd line is a return line. Inside the pump is a pressure regulator. Anything over 13 or 14 psi gets returned to the tank. This has an effect on emmissions also by keeping the fuel cooler and limiting evaporitive emmissions. jim

1984 K20 350M engine with 465,000 miles. Well, it's finally done!! Almost 2 years of work, but it was really worth the effort. Little stuff left to do is mount winch, wet sand & buff out and build belly pan\running boards. Body work takes lots and LOTS of beer!!!!
