Question which one would be best?

Hey im cody im 15 and im looking for a truck to fix up. I turn 16 in june so it cant be a huge project. I just want it to be almost done by the time school starts back up. I have a couple trucks im looking at right now and i was just going to ask for your thought on which one would be the best. My price range is under $4000 so its not going to be a show truck when i get done. I would rather have a swb but there really hard to find for a reasonable price. Or my dad and i might cut the frame to make it a short bed. But here are the links.

My dad and I went and looked at this one it is in pretty good shape there isnt any dents and its mostly just surface rust except on the drivers side rocker
http://oklahomacity.craigslist.org/car/589318988.html

This one is my favorite but i havent gone to look at it yet so i dont know what the body condition is like
http://oklahomacity.craigslist.org/car/613110040.html

And then there is this one. I like this one alot it and there isn't really that much rust on it except under the battery on the fender
http://oklahomacity.craigslist.org/car/611670713.html

thanks alot

Re: which one would be best?

Just wanted to be the first one to you to the board! I'm 16 and my DD is a 98 tahoe, but i have a 67 4x4 with a 305 and a 4 spd. The blk truck is probably only going to top out at 70 if you are rle lucky. My truck, b4 the brakes quit working completely, went about 65. IMHO i think for a 1st vehicle, you should get a newer vehicle. The most expensive vehicle you have listed is 3000, and i got my Tahoe which is fully loaded, leather, heated seats, 350, AT, AC 4x4 for $3500 from my dad's work. Granted it has 200,000 miles on it, but was in excellent shape. i think you don't have to get a deal like that to find a good deal on a 10 to 15 year old truck. If a 67-72 is what you have your heart set on, go for it, but a newer truck will have fuel injection, ABS, AC, etc. and will still be for a good deal and be more reliable for a DD for a high schooler as well as get better mileage. My tahoe gets 17 with a K&N and a Hypertech tuner and can still get to free way speeds without going over 2500 RPM because of OD. Any of those trucks would be running 3000-4000 RPM at 70 mph, if they could do it at all. Just my $.02 from a fellow HS student.

Thumbs up Re: which one would be best?

Welcome, at you're age I got my 1970 chev longhorn(sold). I know that you're chomping at the bit to get you're pickup. Outa the three trucks you posted I'd get the 1967. If it were me sit on you're hands and wait for the right fit. 3 speeds are good for low horsepower and torque conditions. The fourspeeds are bulletproof and their easy to install. As far as the motors go any smallblock chevy will do all u want. No matter what you choose you'll love these trucks and they'll love u back... ENJOY

Re: which one would be best?

It will go plenty fast with a 283 with a 3 speed, trust me. I have a '68 short step that has the original Inline 6 with 3 speed on the column and one time I had it going at least 80mph, probably was going faster but the needle started bouncing at 80. You probably don't need to go too fast though, want to be safe. Save your racing for the drag strip.

Re: which one would be best?

Welcome to the website. You need to look at the shortbed,I like that one. But,you need to know the rust situation. The other two have solid bodies and that`s the main thing.A longbed can hang with the best.As far as considering newer models, there are repairs on newer vehicles that will cost as much as a new motor for an older truck. These trucks are very easy to keep on the road, with fuel economy being the only set back.

Re: which one would be best?

ok, that makes sense, and i love my 67 and grandpa's 72 GMC to death, but my tahoe is much more reliable than either of them, but your plan makes sense, and i wish you luck in your hunt and working on your truck. Just be sure to always be safe and use proper tools, and if you don't know what you are doing, you have the knowledge of every member of this board at your disposal and don't be afraid to ask us, the guy at NAPA, etc because it is 100 times better to take longer and find out the right information than it is to rush in and do it wrong and have to ask us and then do it over.
Good luck in all of your project hunting and and fixing

Re: which one would be best?

I like the '67 --- because the 67 and 68 nose is cool for one --- and 2: -- its cheap.

I hate to be a pessimist, but many people pick up their share of dings in their teenage years (i myself, totalled 2 vehicles in spectacular fashion before i was 20)

If you have to work on it anyway -- starting out with something cheap is nice - (as long as its safe)

Hey, welcome aboard.
From way out here on the left coast, it looks like a toss up between the '67 & the '72.
Whatever you decide to buy, just make sure your a$$ fits the seat comfortably.
Ya gotta be happy with whatcha get!

Re: which one would be best?

You`ll be happy with the 283.It`s power enough and sounds like any other small block.A 3spd is fine, too. They get a bad rap because they`re all old these days. Most muscle car 4spd need a rebuild or already had one when you find them. The difference is peoplw "want" the 4spds and are willing to sink money into them.We used to toss those and slap another in back in the day.It wasn`t worth the money to fix.I`ve had two shortbeds with big block/3spd set-ups.There have been alot of performance vehicles made with the 3spd behind them. There was a time when they were preferred over automatics for performance.
I think you won`t regret buying the`67,from what I know. The shortbed has been "through the mill" and now he wants to dump it.$1,000 off beause now it needs a solenoid? It`s got other issues,I`m sure.
There`s no way of setting a price,I wouldn`t make paint the first thing to attack. But,you`re in HS and guys (& gals) can be rude.I`d just rather have something that sounds and runs right than a shiney truck that could die in the school lot.Not cool with or without the paint.Once it on the road you can work and save for the paint job.Maybe your dad`s friend would let you work for some of the cost.Maybe work on your own truck.

None of the ones you showed up there where really any deal seemed like to me. you should really look around past your local area. i picked this 70 up for 1k, has most of the big stuff done, it needed a engine when i got it but with your 4k budget, you could get one like this and buy a real nice crate to throw in it.

Re: which one would be best?

I waited for the right one at the right time. Im 21 now, but i got my first c10 when i was 15, and completely restored it(with the exception of paint, it had really pretty patina :rollseyes its in my sig if you want to see it. it had a 350 with a 3 speed. Dont let anyone knock on you if you end up with a 3 speed on the tree, once you get it adjusted and get used to it, 3 on the tree is really fun.

heres a vid of my old 69 with a 350 and a 3 speed

Re: which one would be best?

it took a while because i had a full time job, side job, and school. As far as cost, i went alot further than you would need to go to get your first one running. All in all i had 8k in it. but thats with a new crate engine, a new 3 speed transmission ( yes i spent 600 on a new 3 speed) complete break job, complete front end linkage, with moog parts. all bolts changed out to stainless steel. new carb and intake. you get the picture. basically you dont need to spend that much to get one running.
