Towing an auto
I have a 1936 chevy 4 door sedan and I am working on a 1959 Apache short box and I would like to tow them behind my motorhome. I have been told I can do it, other say no. Some say I have to use a trailer, others say I need to disconnect the drive shaft and others say just tow it!
Both vechicles will have turbo 350 trans. Does any one know how I should be towing them? Regards Waggy! |

Re: Towing an auto
When ever you tow car with an automatic transmission the drive wheel should not turn or you will damage your transmission. So those who are telling you to disconnect the drive shaft or tow it are correct.

Re: Towing an auto
I used to be a wrecker driver years ago, and I've seen transmissions torn up by wrecker drivers who were too lazy to pull the driveshafts. Rule of thumb used to be in the towing business; anything over 5 miles, or any distance with speeds over 40mph, pull the shaft now, or pull the transmission later.

Re: Towing an auto
Oh yea, one other thing to consider....use a trailer, and you can back up. A tow bar, and it can be done (backing up) but it's very difficult. So, just hope you don't get stuck in a gas station or restaurant parking lot where you have to back out of a space.
