Original grille on my '62...

Swapped out the grille on my '62 last night... painted behind it white. I got the grille from 62 short step. I had the headlight bezels re-chromed and my buddy painted the letters and striped in the grille bars black. I'm happy with it... Here's a pic... not the greatest picture in the world, it's from my buddy's phone... jc

Re: Original grille on my '62...

Looks good man. I have a '63 and was able to put the right grille back on it thanks to LILRED66. I was going to sand and paint behind it before I put the grille on but I decided to put the grille on one afternoon after I got off and couldn't resist putting the grille on then and so I didn't have the time to sand behind it and paint it before it got dark. I'm probably going to take the grill back off and sand and paint behind it. I've been trying to decide whether to just spray some rustoleum black paint on it since the truck is only in black primer or paint it with some white rustoleum so it has that original look in the front.

Re: Original grille on my '62...

My '62 grill is starting to look pretty decrepit. Gotta figure out whether I should rechrome or go white. I'm thinking white (to match my roof, mirors and bumpers - and maybe my rallyes!)

Joe,

I used to want to swap my grille for an early quad headlight grille, but you've changed my mind. That 62' grille is BAD!

Re: Original grille on my '62...

Those are original style "T-3" headlights with cat-eye covers. They are not as bright as the new halogens, but I can see good with them. According to a friend of mine, old T-3's in working condition are worth some good money, but I got mine a the junkyard off of a 57 dump truck, for about $5 for both, and they work great!

Re: Original grille on my '62...

I didn't even know until a few months ago that they were originally white behind the grill. It seems strange that on such a cheaply built truck they would go to the trouble of doing a 2-tone. All the ones I see have been repainted a solid color. But I like yours a lot. With bright colors its always good to throw in some white or black to subdue the brightness.

The factory painted the area behind the grill black on all chevy trucks from 60-66. They also painted only a 2" border surrounding the grill panel white. This was done for the grill to have a floating effect. This paint combination also adds much detail to the front end. Most trucks lost this detail when they got there first cheapo repaint. As they say "The Devil is in the Details".

Re: Original grille on my '62...

It's actually supposed to be white around the grille and black behind it. I chose to go all white... thanks...

I borrowed my buddy's camera. I ran outside and snapped a couple shots. It's snowing here in Santa Fe today! What's up with that? Anyhow, here are the pics....
