Worn out 3 on the tree
I have a 66' and still have the shifter on the column and would really like to keep it, but any of you guys that have these know they can become a real pain. Mine locks up quite often. It's gotten to be such a hassle, I seldom drive it anymore.
Is there anyone out there that sales a rebuild kit for these? What can be done so that it will shift again if there are no kits? |

Re: Worn out 3 on the tree
There are no rebuild kits that I know of, however there are a few guys on here that can tell you how to do it by building up some weld in the wore out areas and then grinding them back down untill they work. I think that's it in a nut shell.
I chose to install a Hurst Indy 3 speed shifter. It took a couple hours, $100.00 bucks, and 4 beers +/- 2. Easy fix. Made driving the truck fun again. I ran it that way all winter. And then this spring I went to a 700r4 tranny, that's the ticket! Last edited by Tim64; 08-28-2008 at 01:31 PM. |

Re: Worn out 3 on the tree
Have you tried justs adjusting the slop out of it yet? If not, I'd try that first before taking it apart to rebuild.
My 3-tree has 253K-plus miles on it (odometer broke some 8 years ago at 52999, hasn't healed yet), and is working fine. I had the usual lockup problem, would happen 2 or 3 times a month. Some time back one of our friends here posted info on how to adjust them, it is really simple. I did it and haven't had the lock up since. (Not to say it isn't coming, but it hasn't yet.) It's cheap and easy and I think worth trying before digging into a rebuild. |
