ways to help mpg
okay, i seriously need to get my mpg up. i dont have a label thing to set my timing so i have to do that by ear. i also know nothing about tuning carbs either

Keep your foot out of it! Seriously, I dont know much about carbs being that I dont even have one. DIESELS RULE!!

Stay off I-40 (It shakes the fuel out of the tank!!!!) lol
-Timing is a key factor but driving habits are the most important.(Bone stock would have been 8 degree's) Constant in/out of the gas ruins MPG. -Of course engine health is a big part too, how do the plugs look? Color I mean... nice shade of tan? anything more and your hurting MPG. -EGR operation. The Spring gets weak in the EGR and cause it to open too early. - Choke adjustment. coming up on winter time, make sure your choke is releasing as soon as possible. It can account for more than 2 gallons or more per week if the pull-off is bad or the choke thermostat engages too long. -Tire pressure - higher pressure = less rolling resistance/terrible ride -engine oil viscousity too high will cause poor mileage I know there's more im not thinking about, anyone else? i got no egr
i installed a block off plate for it. and i probably should change my plugs and wires, because i dont even remember the last time i did. |

Add a soft or hard tonneau cover or just remove the tailgate and install a net to improve the aerodynamics of the truck.

Things loaded inside the bed would fall out Open pickup beds tend to add to the drag coefficient and thats why tonneau covers hard or soft and air dynamic shaped canopy aids in the drag coefficient which will improve mpg. Removing the tailgate helps in letting the air flow through reducing the air resistance. The more resistance on the object the more energy required to pass through it. Its the law of physics.

Ah these truck have the aerodynamics of a barn door anyways. Don't stand on it, get dual exhaust and headers, make sure you have a good air filter, good tires and non of your brakes are sticking. Remove excess weight a.k.a wife

i advanced my timing some more, and it seems like it is running like it was before we messed with it the first time, which means less power, and more mpg

Carb adjustment
Whats the condition of your carburater? Might need a rebuild? Running too rich. Have you played with the wieghts and springs in the distributor? Give that a try. Use a vacuum gage to setup your carb. Alot of factors effect mileage. Tire size, rear gears, cam, intake, etc.
