door to fender gap too wide HELP please
Hey, its been a long time since I have been on here. I finally got some time to work on the 68 gmc 4x4.I painted the doors & fenders last week,installed them & the gap is too wide on the bottom,1/2'' on one side & 3/4'' on the other. the frame & radiator support are original & the fenders are Goodmark. I installed an (ENERGY) polyurethane body kit. I took the front mounts out & put an 1/8'' rubber piece instead,before I did this the gap was wider yet. I wonder if I need to raise the front of the cab, what do you guys think?
I think the cab was off of a 71 2wd if that makes a difference. any help is greatly appreciated,Philip |

Loosen the rear cab bolts, remove the front cab bolts, and make sure your fender bolts are loose. Then jack the front of the cab up untill the door gap is right and tighten the fender bolts. (All 3 rear ones) Let the jack down and you should be good to go. If you see a space between the bushings and the bottom of your cab you may have to shim the front cab mounts. There just isn't enough give in urithane bushings. WES

My suggestion would be to shim the front cab mounts. If the bolts are welded into the cab floor, you will have to slot the shims. I would also shim enough so the the radiator supports can be used instead of the 1/8" rubber pieces.
With the gap that you have, if you try to use the fenders to hold the cab up you will run the risk of warping them or the bolts will slip, (yes I have tried it before). Jim

I would like to make a point slash question. If you tilt the front of the cab up won't the gap from cab to bed be off?
I would fit the bed also to make sure it all fits now instaed of having to do it again. I'm like the expert of doing things 3 times before its perfect. Last edited by RustenPaines; 11-08-2008 at 07:54 PM. |

I think you are on the right track with raising the front of the cab. I've heard of guys using wide washers to do it. Could probably even cut a couple thick ones to start.
I do have one question about the core support though. Is there anything keeping it from sitting down like its supposed to? Bolts tightened down all the way? Are the mounts sitting in the frame holes correctly? I would double check that before I started raising the cab. Ok so that was more than one question.... Frank

Good question RustedPaines,I never thought of that. I shimmed the front of the cab today, it only needed 1/4'' per side & the gap looks good now. I am going to Billings,MT next friday to haul back a 71 c-10 that has a good solid box with no rust so right now I cant even check my cab to box gap. Thanx for the help everyone.
