Instant A.C. the hard way

This morning as usual I went outside and started my suburban, cranked the heat and turned on the rear defroster. Same thing every cold morning up here. About 10 minutes later I drive off, get to the corneer stop sign, all clear no one around- no cars no people no domestic or wild life in the immeadiate area. I go to take my foot off the brake and BAM!!! The tailgate window shatters all to hades. The only thing holding it in place right now is the tint on the glass back there. So now I gotta find me a new back glass and get it installed. Untill then I'm gonna have a cardboard rear window!!!

I don't know. I had just pulled up to the stop sign and just as I took my foot off the brake there was a loud BANG!!! I looked in my rear view monitor and couldn't see anything but a bunch of jagged lines. I got out and went to the back to see if there were any holes anywheres (BB guns Pellet guns) but there was nothing there - no hole, no chip. And the corner is always deserted that time in the morning.
This isn't the first time i'd heard of something like this happening. Although with it being tempered glass I always thought it was just some old wives tale...until last friday when it happened to me.

Re: Instant A.C. the hard way

I had a back glass in an 84 4wd blazer I had pop on me like that, BUT the window was down a touch and I was crawling up a hill with it maybe twisting the frame a tad...so I know what caused mine...yours I have no clue...

Re: Instant A.C. the hard way

i think the key to this one is the rear defroster, he said it was on full blast, and with it being very cold outside, bam, youve probably seen it happen to a windshield crack, where you turn on the heat and the crack spreads, i beileve it has something to do with the temperature difference causing internal stress

Re: Instant A.C. the hard way

Had to have been the defroster on the glass its self only 2 settings for it. Off or on. The rear heater was on high but the temp gauge hadn't even moved yet and it doesn't even blow directly on the rear windows. It blows across the floor area and circulates around from there from it's own turbulance. The last time I'd opened the rear tailgate was almost 2 months ago.
Will be double checkinging everything internal later on when I get the rear glass replaced.
And, IF I can be there I'll be getting pics of the R&R to post up on here in a new "HOW TO" posting if anyone's interested.

No pics of it right now but here's a page from LMC TRUCK that shows a break down of it.

Re: Instant A.C. the hard way

Well I removed the old glass remains today and found that one of the four bolt holding the regulator had come out and 2 others were loose, while the last one holding the ground strap for the defroster was stil nice and tight. the channel at the bottom of the glass got bent a bit while attempting to roll it down so I couldopen the gate and remove the access plate. I need to replace the channel filler felt that insulats the glass from direct glass-to-metal contact with the bottom regulator. So until tomorrow I have a visqueen/duct tape rear window.

Re: Instant A.C. the hard way

Had something similar happen to my dads old 74 truck about 2 decades ago (Western South Dakota)... just a simple crack or rock chip can cause something like this with any side or rear windows.
Any weakness can cause this, especially when the temperature is under 15ºF
