super budget gas tank...
Ok I got a sweet deal on a 66 lwb with a bed of parts. Have been doing the body work and stuff like that. I want to replace the brand new tank from in the cab to out of the cab unit. The plan is a super TIGHT budget on this truck, but trick it out as much as I can. The dare was to build it for $6k or less and make it lay frame. So every penny counts. Any ideas whats a budget minded way to do this tank conversion? I have checked out the tank kits and it would be like $350 for everything to make it work.... just want to make sure thats the cheapest way. Did I mention the $6k was paint and wheels also!! I love a good chanllenge

Re: super budget gas tank...
There is another tank that you can get for the back thats around $200 with sending unit, i cant remember the link though, im sure one of the other guys will post it up real soon though.
Do a search in the forum for fuel tanks there is all sorts of different ways the guys have done theirs. Last edited by scotts62; 11-19-2008 at 11:31 AM. Reason: oops |

Re: super budget gas tank...
The cheapest way is to use a tank from another vehicle and not buy new. Adapt it and make it work. I'll probably use a tank from and Astro van or a Jeep tank that I've already got laying around. Cost = priceless

Re: super budget gas tank...
Here is what I did. Tank is out of a late 70's-early 80's 1/2 ton Chevy Van. Welded a 3X4 piece of angel to the end of the bed rails and drilled for the hangers. Also had to trim the lower edge of the upper X-member slightly and the one cross sill. Hole sawed threw the frame for the fuel fill and used a 88'-98' Chev Pickup gas door. I think I paid 35.00 for the tank fuel fill neck and door.

Re: super budget gas tank...
Jeep Wrangler looks pretty close to the same shape as that LMC truck catalog, 19gallon and made out of that poly/plastic stuff. Heck grab a stocker and I'm sure you could grab the 1/8 steel box they call a armor which happens to have the holes for hanging it.
Heres what an aftermarket skid looks like, but you can see the square holes in the rear that that straps use. I have a 2000 wrangler if anybody needs measurements I could take them. Heres how it was installed if anybody wants to bother looking at it as well it shows pictures of the Jeep tank. http://www.jeepaholics.com/feature/k...id/default.htm TJ, the round headlight one fills from the drivers side, YJ square headlights fills from the back, however I'm sure you could remove the clamps and add new hoses. |

Re: super budget gas tank...
Most of the conversions with a factory style tank instead of a fuel cell just use a stock Blazer fuel tank.

502tripower,
From the looks of it you cant see your tank at all with the bumper mounted. Any idea if you would see it if you had just a roll pan attached or do you think it would be hidden? |

Re: super budget gas tank...
The roll pan does hide the tank completely.

Re: super budget gas tank...
FYI, The "Blazer" tank which LMC and others sell is also found in the more common Suburban.
