12 bolt questions.
i am on a tight budget right now. but I have alot of choices. i have a 69 C10 3 speed 12 bolt with 6 lug. the question i have is, i have 6 lug rims. My rear is single traction. I do have a spare single traction rear - 5 lug and just purchased for almost nothing another 12 bolt 5-lug welded posi rear. i also have a swiss cheese 1977 El Camino SS (as its marked on the interior with ss badges and has a 350 and it is a 12 bolt. and supposed to be a posi unit.
Is the El Camino's rear a 12 bolt truck rear or a 12 bolt car rear? i have 3 sets of 5 lug rims. and 2 sets of 5 lug front disc front ends (the whole nine yards) that need rebuilding and my 69 6 lug drum front end is new so i really dont wanna waste the money i put into that. Again money is tight so i want to make the best desicion........ Is there a cheap way to turn my rear into posi, or is the welded posi with a 5 to 6 lug adapters the to go or is it way to dangerous to have for the occasional drive to work and back and car show. Or does anyone know what the 12 bolt in the el camino is. i can probably get wheel adaptors from 5 to 6 lug. i think the rear is about 1 and a 1/2 inches narrower then the truck rear so the spacers will make up for that. . so what is the best rout? cheap spool or posi for the 6 lug...? welded rear and adapter????? or the El camino 12 bolt with a adaptor? Thanks guys Last edited by mbc9ieII; 11-27-2008 at 02:26 AM. |

Re: 12 bolt questions.
Since the El Camino is in the Chevelle
family the differential will not be like the trucks. Jim

Re: 12 bolt questions.
When you say "welded posi rear" do you mean the spider gears are welded together in an open rear end locking the rear wheels together? If so, you won't be happy driving that thing around on a daily basis. Going around corners your inside tire is going to skip because of the shorter turning radius than that of the outside tire. A true posi has a clutch pack that releases that lock when an appropriate amount of torque is applied to prevent the wheel skip.

Re: 12 bolt questions.
The ElCamino rear is a car unit, "Chevelle", so that is no help.
The Welded spider mess is exactly that....a mess. Dangerous on the street and not legal for track use in any sanctioning body the I ever heard of. There really is not a "cheap" way to get a posi. Getting ahold of a used complete rear end w/ the posi already there is probably the most cost effective, especially since you are looking to change the lug pattern too. |

Re: 12 bolt questions.
get lucky and find something at the local junk yard...
I found a 6 lug posi 12 bolt for $35... then I went and bought some lottery tickets!
