Kinda dumb question
How much water (or antifreeze) would it take to fill up the raditior in a 76 k-10 with a 350? It is at someones house and I am going to go and try to start it, but the cooling system is completely dry and there isn't really a hose available.

To be safe take 4 gallons (2 water, 2 antifreeze). This should me more than enough including the reservior and all the water being in the block. Make sure to get all the air out of the block as well.

Ok, so 4 gallons should fill it up? The reason for my question is that the truck is about 1.5 hours away, and there really isn't a place to get water around where it is.

My Haynes manual says that 1975 through 1987 (all models) with the 350 have a capacity of 18 quarts (4.5 gallons).
The 6 cylinders hold 15 quarts, and the 400 small block and 454 big block each hold 20 quarts. To be safe, I'd take 5 gallons. It's not like you're never going to use it again! DJS |

And heres that dumb answer
Yeah I say take (2) antifreeze & (3) waters just to be safe. I have a 350 with a 4-row monster radiator and I never use more then 4 I think, but im not real sure. If your going to be buying water in a bottle you should buy distilled water. It does not harm your engine/motor as much as regular water. Less deposits and rust. I have been puttin nothing but distilled water in this engine ever since I got it (new crate 3.5 years). When I did the intake swap I was suprises at how clean it was. I usually change my coolant/water about every 12-18 months. Which is pretty much when something breaks
If you havent ran the truck in awhile and dont know what to expect. I would bring a few extra gallons of water to flush through the engine before you start it, just to get some crap out if there is any. What about hoses? Are you sure the hoses are all good?

I think I will just take 5 gallons of water, because I would have to drain it to replace the hoses to bring it home anyway. After I change the hoses then I will put antifreeze and distilled water in it. I am probably going to go work on it on sunday, so I will let you know what happens
