New exhaust
im getting new exhaust and i was wondering what you think about what im wanting to get... i have a street/strip motor and i want it to be quiet on the road..(sleeper) so i have exhaust cutouts for the strip.. I want 2.5 in. from the headers into a single 3, or 4 in. pipe all the way back to a newer truck muffler... i think its off a 2500hd or f250.. and a turndown right after.. what do you think?

Re: New exhaust
3.5 inch single gets you the same cross sectional area as the two 2.5 inch diameter pipes.

Re: New exhaust
Honestly, I would just get a pair turbo mufflers and run a true dual setup. These are very tame at cruise but are semi-loud at full throttle. If you add an H pipe, this will further quiet and mellow the tone. Furthermore, turbo mufflers flow extremely well. You wouldn't be losing much if any power by running them on the street.

Re: New exhaust
True duals and an h pipe would be my choice also. With the right mufflers its not loud at all. I had proflow muffler done on a 383 street truck and it was real tame. What size is the motor?

Re: New exhaust
I just went through this on my C-10 . I did the trailing arm crossmember mod and ran 2.5" to a pair of Pypes street pros and they are load . They are so load i told the muffler shop to just put dumps on it vs tail pipes for now cause there coming off . I am also looking for a quiet free flowing muffler for my street truck . The Luv has scofeilds on it and it is load , but has a purpose .

Re: New exhaust
When I had my 01 SS Camaro I was looking for a very mellow tone at idle with a very mellow tone at WOT with the cut outs closed. What I ended up doing was:
Long tube headers Dual electric cut outs right off the collector 3" to 2.5" reducers on the non cut out side Dual Catco cheap cat's 2.5" dual to single 3" flowmaster y collector Single 3" in Hooker Aerochamber muffler with the factory dual 2.5" tips out. (forgot how good it sounded until I found the sound clip: http://73-ls1.com/misc/Thunder236.wav ) Thing sounded close to stock as far as tone and how loud it was. You would have to listen to hear the big 236/230 .595/.575 lift cam in it. Then, on race day, open the cut outs and it was one loud car. My truck is pretty deafening right now with 3.5" collectors down to 3" 3" X-pipe Warlock mufflers with Dual electric cut outs hung on the muffler No dumps It was louder with the plugs they give you for the muffler as they have an angle to them, but with the flat portion of the cut out, it deadens the sound some. I'm planing on getting rid of this set up and going with: 3.5" to 3" reducers Dual electric cut outs 3" to 2.5" reducers Dual 2.5" in / Single 3" out Hooker Aero Chamber Muffler Dump just before the rear tire on the passanger side. If this isn't quiet enough, I'll put something between the out put of the muffler and the dump. I don't need the noise or the performance when capped. It will move plenty for around town even with a big plug in it.

Re: New exhaust
I added an X pipe and it made tons of difference. I agree with the turbo muffler idea, and you could always add some glass packs in font or after those to quiet it even more. And I read an article talking about pipe size, if you start out with 3 inch off the collectors and neck it down to 2.5 inch before the mufflers, you can pull more torque and still keep it relatively quiet

Re: New exhaust
I have several dynos on my set up and other buddies that show no loss of TQ running dual electric cut outs right off the headers. Actually it only gained in all 3 cases. In my case one was with the stock cam and the other was with the bigger cam. Both were in my 01 SS. Even the back to back with my truck the open headers lost nothing bellow and only gained.

Re: New exhaust
Headers with an x pipe and hollowed out turbo packs sounds wicked. If you dont want the loudness of straight pipes try Thrush glasspacks,it sounded great with these also but you couldnt hear it in the cab much at all.

Re: New exhaust
I just took the thrush flowmaster look-a-like off my truck cause they were too loud. I put dynomax ultra flows 3". They are tons quieter and flow more than the others.

Re: New exhaust
i ended up just putting stock replacement mufflers on it, with the cutouts.. its awesome.. all you can hear is the fan pretty much.. i love it.
here it them being uncapped. it sounds a little loud at first.. but thats because i took two of the 3 wingnuts off before i recorded so the vid wouldnt be as long, but it compromised the sound a little.. just note that at first its a lot quieter
