I did mine the cheap and easy way. I wanted to keep the stock look. So what I did was take some small squares of plywood and cut them into a square. The measurements were like 8"x8" if i remember correctly. Then I covered them with the speaker carpet from my local stereo shop. Then centered the speaker in the square. Then, I mounted them under the dash under above the kick panel, each corner parallel to the floor board screwed in the bottom lip under the dash. I supported the back of the square with some metal pipe tape that ran up under the dash so the speakers laid parallel to the floor boards. I hope this makes sense. I used six inch speakers. I saw this on several older rods at some local car shows. They were totally hidden and sounded great. I did this in my 67 SWB. Sorry that I dont have pics as I have sold the truck. Total cost was about 10 buck after the cost of the $80 speakers.

This is for my '78 and I know the dash is totally different but you get the idea...
I could buy the pre made plate assembly, but I wanted to pick out my own speakers and had plexiglas laying around and this is what I came up with, Only cost me for speakers. a pair of 3.5's in the dash sound good. If you shape it right, you can use the oe mount system and never mod the dash at all.

This is a factory dash-mounted speaker mount with the speaker body removed and two late model GM door speakers integrated into the mount. Not HiFi by any means, but better than the old factory mono speaker.

Hillbilly Deluxe 65:

The factory speaker chassis has a rubber bumper on one side and a stand-off on the other side. The stand-off has a hole for a screw to secure it to the underside of the dash lip below the slotted grille in the middle of the dash and the rubber bumper friction fits into a groove in the dash assembly. This is the factory location and factory mounting method for the factory speaker chassis.

I don't have a photo, because it is pretty busy under there with everything installed, so the clarity is poor.
