GMC Guages

I was wanting to replace the whole instrument cluster in my 66 GMC. Maybe go with one of the billet pieces with guages in them already, but I'm have a hard time finding any for these year model trucks, and everytime I do, they have a little message that says "Chevrolet Only."

Does anyone know why this is? And, does anyone know where is a good place to get one at?

Re: GMC Guages

I had the same problem as you.....I could find billet inserts, but they also lacked the trim ring around the bezel....

I finally just ordered a Dolphin gauge kit, and dremeled out the holes in my old gauge insert.....

I'll try and find a pic to post..

Re: GMC Guages

Yep, on the Chevy trucks, the key start is in the bezel, as is the light switches I believe...

On GMC the gauges are in the insert with a flush mount trim ring also built into the insert

Re: GMC Guages

Yes the GMC's are different unfortunately. And since so few GMC 60-66 are out there or being restored (compared to Chevy's) it doesn't look good for aftermarket dash pieces anytime soon...That is why I opted to keep my original cluster.

Re: GMC Guages

Well, the problem is, the PO put in some hideous guages that I guess he got at the local autozone. The little 2" guages and they look terrible, but I can't see how normal guages would go in there. I don't even have a speedo. Does anyone have pics of GMC dashes I could look at? The one pic on this thread looks nothing like my guage cluster for some reason. Maybe I'm missing some parts.

joe231 Don't get me wrong, I've got 3 new Chevys, 2 '72 Chevys, and a Chevy powered race car at the house, but after searching for several years to find the '72s that still weren't worth the money I gave for them and I can't find a title for, when I was offered a 66 GMC with a new Chevy 454 that was 1/2 restored for $2000, I couldn't resist that.

Re: GMC Guages

Boese makes an aluminum insert... they are pricey tough. They offer them with gauges too.

When I get around to it, I'm gonna make an insert out of thick plastic or something else cheap.

As far as I know there's only 2 or 3 three styles of GMC clusters. Cort's is the early (60-62) one, mine is the later one (62-66), and I think the big trucks used different ones too. Here's mine. I just used the factory cut-outs for an autometer tach and water temp gauge.
