hey guys i have a chance to get a good deal on a L98 motor and a 700R4 tranny, out of a corvette, is that ok? If so other than the motor mounts what else will cause me problems? How do i hook the computer up in my truck, or will i need to change it out? I have a 66 C10 and I'm 15 years old so if you could help out i will be thankfull

Welcome to the forums from Kansas City, KS. I can't speak to engine choices, but make sure to keep us posted with lots of photos. Good luck with your project.

Re: came across a motor
The L98 is a good engine. I have one in my Trans Am. It wont have as much power as a LT1 or LS1 stock ,but it has lots of low end torque and should be great in a truck. There are several cheap tricks to wake it up. The stock truck mounts will bolt to the block. If you already have the computer and harness stick with the fuel injection. If you don't have someone with electrical skills to help you figure out the stock wiring.Check into getting a aftermarket harness.

Re: came across a motor
I know its not the same, but I was given an 89 with throttle body injection and man there where so many wires that I felt like I was in the back of a computer network nightmare.
I'll probably huck it all and go with a Carb because I don't have a degree with MIT. |

Re: came across a motor
It looks scarier than it is. If you can get a wiring diagram to look at. You just need to hook up the power and grounds for the computer. and bypass or remove a few wires. It would be worth spending a few bucks for a aftermarket harness thats plug and play. Unless you like cold natured gas hogs that need to be adjusted every time the weather changes.

Re: came across a motor
On the motor mounts, are you saying that that my 66's motor mounts will hook up to the block?
On the wiring harness, i am going to have to buy a whole new harness anyways because i did a frame off restoration, who do you say makes a good wiring harness? And i thank you all for the great info!

Re: came across a motor
I put the L98 in my 68 Firebird using the stock harness., but I did pretty much ruin a 'Vette to get it out without cutting any wires.
the 'Vete trans has a different tailhousing...if you have to fab a crossmember anyway like I did, easy enough to make it take a TH400 mountgoing lengthwithe instead of crosswise. otherwise get a tailhousing off a regular car. I had nice colorized wiring diagrams, but I think they died in my last hard drive fail.

Re: came across a motor
Thanks for the link http://www.painlessperformance.com/webcatalog/index.
2manyprojects This is a great place to get information. We don't have the motor and tranny yet. Going to try and get it this week I think we have to take the whole car still trying to talk my mom into letting us put in the garage until we pull the motor (not enough warm days to work outside) but she doesn't want to park her Tahoe outside. Can't blame her can't get too mad at her either she the one loaning me the money to do all this. Can't tell you all how much I am learning from all of you guys thanks a lot. I will post some pics when we get the car here and start pulling the motor and tranny. By the way does anyone have any suggestions on what kind of shifter I should get?

Re: came across a motor
It's no problem I'm happy to help. Getting the whole car is the best way to do it. You have everything you will need and can sell the leftovers. Your mom is lucky. When I was 16 I dragged home a 53 Pontiac hearse. Needless to say my mom was not happy when the wrecker dropped it in the driveway LOL .Actually I think that's the only time Ive heard her cuss. Use that as an example, she will be thrilled with a parts car temporarily. I like a boring column shifter in a truck like yours. Any of the aftermarket floor shifters would be ok, just make sure it's mounted high enough to reach easily. I had a B&M prostick in my S10 that was decent, once I got used to the reverse lock out.

Re: came across a motor
Moms are great!
We did have a 66c-10 stepside in the back yard that's my first truck my dad found it my mom bought it for me. Then we found and got a 65 GMC lwb and parked in the front yard. Mom wasn't happy. We then found a 64 c-10 stepside when we got that home she said NO! We had to take the 65 and 64 out to my grandpa's. She is OK with the 66 being in the garage while we rebuild it. Aren't moms great!

Re: came across a motor
Ok I going this weekend to pick up the corvette that I plan on pulling the motor and tranny from, what other stuff can I use or need to pull off the car before we haul it away? My moms out of town next week so I have to move fast to get it out of the garage before she gets back. I am sure there are some parts I could sell to recoup some money. If you remember we took this truck down to the frame this is a total rebuild.

Re: came across a motor
Save everything you can that's good. You can sell it later like you said. Ive actually paid for cars, and made money selling leftovers from the parts car. When you pull the motor and trans take it out as complete as possible. You never know what you might need. Unhook the harness in the dash and just fold it over the engine, and don't forget the ecm and vats module. Might be easier to pull the whole dash to trace it down. If your adventurous use the complete vette harness. Street rod guys might want the suspension. This is what my moms favorite looked like, but not so pretty lol, Faded paint and surface rust.

Re: came across a motor
Well, we got it home and in the garage and started taking it apart. There is no wasted space under the hood. Should have the motor and transmission out by this weekend. I am taking everything off that I think can be used later or sold. Will post more pics as we pull the motor and place it on the 66 c-10 frame. Let me know your thoughts.

Re: came across a motor
I did exactly the same thing.....L98/700R4 out of an '85 vette.....I got a new harness, and went speed density, which gets rid of MAF, and goes MAP......
fun stuff........ You'll have to change the tranny tailpiece, the original will not bolt up to the crossmember.... And maybe move the e-brake crossmember...I know I had to.....

Re: came across a motor
You will either need to make/modify your original or buy a new tailpiece that mounts correctly......

Where do you suggest I can get a new tailpiece? Since there was a 3 speed in the 66 c10 before, I still need a new transmission crossmember for the automatic, right? Thanks for the photos they helped a lot. This place and all you guys are a great source of information for a kid like me. I learn something every time I get on here.

Re: came across a motor
I got my new tailpiece off Ebay, and sold the original..
I bought a package that included the tranny crossmember, and engine mounts, and all the bolts and what not...I'm trying to remember where I got them......Anything else I can help with, just let me know.... Chad
