Question brake question for 65

my dad is building a 65 shortbed and is wanting to convert to disc front. i told him that 71 or 72 spindles and brakes will work, after reading on here a little bit everyone is saying that you have to run 71/72 control arms. what is the difference in the years, can't you just change the ball joints? any help is appreciated.

Re: brake question for 65

You can just change the ball joints. The one item required that drum brake trucks don't have is the disc brake drag link. It has different size holes for the later/larger disc brake style tie-rods. Aftermarket companies sell 'adapter' tie-rod sleeves to accomplish the task.

I found it was easier to use 73 & later stuff. Grab the spindles plus all related hardware & swap them in using 73-up BJ's, tie-rods, & drag link. The older idler & pitman arm will still work w/the newer stuff.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.
