Steering Question?
Has anyone tried this? What problems did you encounter if any? I plan on using same setup used for the power steering swap offered by American Classic, along with short column.

I think you got an original there. The problem I see at first glance is that the tire will rub the sector shaft on a hard left turn. Thats the same issue the CPP kit has. As a side note don't toss that box you have on it now. Its has $225 core value.

Only question I have is it pretty much on the same horizontal plane as the steering arm

dump that setup for a toyota 4x4 box. you want the 79'-84' box off one with solid axle. later one have ifs. and cross steering,you want the gemmer (?) type. the toyota box mounts in stock location with small bracket.

The tire rubbing issue was why i'm trying a different approach. I can position this box just about anywhere on the top rail. Where it sits now I avoid any rubbing with the tires im using during mock up. With the original pitman arm the drag link should be horizontal. Thanks for the input, any thoughts are appreciated. Unable to find picture of toyota box installed,with the big block I have limited space.

Interesting idea. I recommend droping the cab back on and checking the angle of the steering shaft. From the relationship of the box shaft to the engine and brake pedel it looks like it is going to be pretty severe and might have binding problems. It's on my mind because that is the stage I am dealing with on my build. Hate to see you get it all fabed and painted and find out the universals won't work!

I actually had the cab set in place when I started the thought process. The angle didn't seem that severe, but I will look at it again,Thanks again guys for your input,

Probably just the angle of the photos then, I know mine on my 4wd is much farther forward and I am still going to have to use at least one double joint because the angles are over 30 degrees.

Well, I am trying something similar to this right now on my Dad's 55. I am trying to use parts we have around as much as possible. So I have the stock 4x4 box from my 72 truck. I am thinking of mounting it in front of the axle as far forward as possible. Right now I am just browsing posts trying to see what columns people have used to see if one of the ones I have laying around could be used since they are to long from what I can tell. 35" for my stock column from the 72 and I also have one from a 68 F*rd truck. Both are auto columns as if I wasn't trying to engineer it enough already..... he wants a column shifter in there too........
Im Glad to see someone else is trying to figure this out as well. Ill check back and see how it goes.

sinister look at my thread, I used a 74 box placed next to the front crossmember, and 82 eldo column. My 74 truck tilt column was too long and the shift lever interfered with the exhaust manifold. Steering box mounting is early in the thread, steering one of last posts.
