Converter Brands?
Sup all.
I'm currently running a Hughes 3500 hd. I'm getting really bad RPM drop as I put it in gear. (500rpm) So I realize I need to run a bigger converter. I have a 4000 spragless Hughes on the shelf. I was told the Hughes don't hit hard enough and to much slippage. So who makes a good converter that's good for our trucks? My C-10 weight is 3950 and run a 4:10 w/ 28x10.5 Hoosier's and here is some numbers on my sbc 406. Thanks C-10 |

Re: Converter Brands?
I've been using a Hughes convertor in my race car for about 5 years and couldn't complain for anything. I'm making a little more power and have a lighter car which is a HUGE thing in convertor talk. But you ought to call Hughes and talk to Dave (he's their convertor guru). Give him your dyno sheet, your race setup, total package specs and send him your convertor. Dave will set you up right. I have no doubt in my mind. Unless you have the cash for a PTC or Coan,, personally I don't think you can do much better than Hughes for the $'s

Re: Converter Brands?
Oh man how I would love a Coan or Neal chance converter. But like you say you get a lot of converter for your Dollar w/ Hughes.
Thanks for the info. I have them on speed dial on my cell. |

Re: Converter Brands?
I've had exellent service and help from BTE [Bill Taylor]. I'm sure there
are other good people and brands but when a company makes me feel they appreciate my money I stick with 'em. I sent one back to them twice just to tweak it and get it to work where I wanted. NO CHARGE. It had not been dynoed. I would bet with your Dyno sheet and a little input they can get it right the first time. |

Re: Converter Brands?
[QUOTE=Marv D;3105048]I don't want to step on anyones toes, but I'm real glad YOU had good service from BTE!!!!!!!!!! I ended up eating a $2300 Dedenbear case BTE glide after only 4 nine second laps!!! because they said "it's a racing transmision, things fail" Well WTF do they think I paid $2300 for a powerglide for???? Just my experience with BTE,, apparently not everybodys.[/QU
I was reading your build on your truck, very cool. I also burned up my 3rd gear on my T350. Is that a common thing? So this year I have all new parts. I'm hoping to hit the hi 11's with the new trans and right converter set up. |

Re: Converter Brands?
The Kevlar band went in 4 passes, no transbrake (took me out of the Pinks all Out in Phx) Bought another band out of my pocket because they wouldn't warantee it,,, 8 passes it went again, again wouldn't warantee anything. Took the trans to Hughes, they replaced the junk input (that was supposed to be some BTE bad dawg piece but wasn't), replaced the valve body, front pump, high gear drum, servo and band, did a normal Hughes freshen (soft parts, steels and frictions) ,,,,, 2 years, just over 125 laps and not a hint of a problem now. I tried cheaping out and saving $800 because BTE had a special on Dedenbear case glides (Hughes SFI case Top sportsman glide was right at $4k at teh time). Cost me over $1500 to fix. Should have just bought a Hughes in the first place. BTW,, looking for the receipt for the repairs to be exact on what they replaced, I found the original receipt from Oldani,, I was wrong,. it wasn't a $2300 glide, it was their $3200 Top-Sportsman glide. But they wouldn't warrantee it in a 2900 pound, 9.teen second door car. Yeah,, I'm pretty soured on BTE!

Re: Converter Brands?
I have a local guy that has always done my glides but I think I'm gonna let PTC put the higher count clutch drum in it and dyno test it before I put it behind the new bullet.

Re: Converter Brands?
DONOT BUY A REDNECK . I lost 6 mph with no other changes in a proven combo . Called them back 3 times and explained every last detail to them and they were like " did it stall @ 3500? Well we hit the nail on the head " . It is being cut open and redone by Circle D here in Houston to go in with the new motor . I should of listened to you guys , but i was in a bind at the time .

Re: Converter Brands?
So far I've been lucky with my Redneck converter but it hasn't been beat on "too" much either. ATI's are built about 20 minutes from where I live and I've heard good things about them too.

Re: Converter Brands?
I've also heard good things about ati. I have a torco by art carr and it seams to be doing ok. My mph on the top end doesn't seam right though.

Re: Converter Brands?
Right now I have a TCI..... all in all i have found you get what you pay for... when all you change is the converter and you feel like you have a new truck you know you did it right... left harder than it ever had and pulled all the way through the lights picked up 4 mph....... and as for the rich man thing that is so true... I spent a lot of cash on a GER probably most in shipping it back 4 times........ I gave up. My 75$ used b&m ran harder than my 1200 GER "door stop"... I also had pretty good luck with bte but I only had an old tci freshend up by them. They were the best to deal with on the phone...for me that one time. Chance is right here in town and I have been hearing their name for lik 20 years.. Its funny to hear all the good things about there stuff... it couldnt be so easy as being right under my nose could it?

Re: Converter Brands?
I ran a ATI Treemaster in my Datsun Z behind my BBC 454 with only 4-5% slip on the top end and still streetable to drive to the track and around town scaring every Honda that came too close....
I have also run Coan converters in several other toys, including my '69 Chevelle behind a rev'ing 427, no issues at all.

Re: Converter Brands?
Anyone use a Dynamic converter yet? I have one for my S10 but it is far from done. I called alot of places and they were the only ones that made me feel like they knew what they were talking about.
