63 Windshield fitting problem
The guy who's renovating my 63 GMC has hit a problem with re-fitting the windshield.
Glass broke when he took it out so he's fitting a new one. i had supplied him with a new (as I thought) weatherstrip which I had bought in Canada in 2007. Problem is that the glass keeps popping out in one corner. He has consulted a professional fitter, whose opinion is that the replacement rubber was probably old stock and had lost some of its elasticity. He tried heating it up in water to soften it but no luck. Anyone come across this problem before and can suggest a fix? Need the truck on the road ASAP since I'm getting married in a few weeks and both future wife and I want the truck to be part of the wedding!

Re: 63 Windshield fitting problem
something to check is the metal edge that the winshield sits in.
In an assembly manual for my 59 chev car, they have detailed instructions for the tolerances for the w/s to the metal frame. they have special wooden spacers that they use to see that the metal is lined up all the wau around.(maybe you could mske some spacers with an old w/s gasket) they had 6 in all 1 each middle top/bottom, and then 1 each on the sides top/bottom. I guess then what you do is make sure the metal edge thaat the gasket sits on is straight and even all the way around, mark all spots to be adjusted, and then straighten them with a hammer, and block. this might be why you are having the problem. there is a worst case scenario, and that is that your cab might be bent, and that is whythe gasket willnot work. |

Re: 63 Windshield fitting problem
Thanks Jon. I don't think the cab's bent; truck's virtually original and there's no impact damage apart from a slight crease on the passenger door.
I'll mention the spacers/tolerances to my guy and see how we get on. currently bidding on a new gasket on e-bay, trouble is I just know the UPS airfreight is going to be a killer! I don't suppose you have any pics that you could scan for me have you?

Re: 63 Windshield fitting problem
Yes the USPS is a lot cheaper than UPS or FedEx. I recently sent 2 packages to the UK for $13 US each via USPS versus the $100 US each the other guys wanted. Of course one package took 2 weeks and the other 10 days, and the other two shippers claimed delivery in 4 to 5 days.

Not just nice, buddy, that's absolutely fantastic!
Thanks very much Jon for going to all that trouble. I've sourced a new weatherstrip on e-bay, will let you know how I get on.

Re: 63 Windshield fitting problem
We had the problem you mention here with the windshield on my 62 1/2 ton. The installer had some type of glue that he put in the lower rear corners. He then used duct tape to hold the seal and glass in place until the glue he used dried. It has stayed in place with no problem for 5 years so far.

Re: 63 Windshield fitting problem
Yes, the mistake in the ebay ad should read 64-66 rather than 63-66 in that the windshields are different starting in 64
