Portals!

Hey guys, I was reading this months 4wheeler & came across this: http://www.motorsports.axletech.com/portal.asp

Looks pretty sweet, 4.9" of lift, a 1.5:1 final ratio (imagine the torque), and 2 1/4" wide gears.

I emailed them to see about price & availability, but something tells me I don't want to know $$$$

What do ya think?

I think they are awesome!That`s 4.9" more ground clearance(for your axles!).I expect they`d pricey.

Would love to have a set! Maybe my stimulis check will cover a set!
I have a unimog with portals ( 24 inches of clearance )--it's great for rocks.

i am not too familiar with the mog's suspension setup, but just looking at those would make me think they would induce pretty bad axlewrap if you used them with leaf springs.

i guess that is a good enough reason to switch to a link-type suspension, though.

Awesome if you have the $$$ and use the rig offroad only, or don't mind never travelling over 55mph.

I had a VW Bus with portals.
I wonder about axles wrap.I guess they can just run a traction bar(s) of some sort.With the gear reduction it`s not as much of an issue since axle wrap/wheel hop is a wheel speed issue with the wheel trying to go faster than the vehicle.

I was wondering about the axle wrap too, but for a dedicated wheeler I think this could be addressed w/ some heavy duty traction bars.?

No reply on the price inquiry yet, I know they'll be waaay out of my price range (I don't even have my dana 60 yet) But I'm pumped they're making them, gives me something to look forward to....someday.

Also noticed they have applications for 2 wheel or 4 wheel steer.

Hummers have always has axles like that, we use to break a lot of axle shafts though. That was probably due to driving 70 mph on the Autobahn in Germany and hitting every mudhole that we could find too!

Yeah, I guessed $800 a piece, but that was more of a hope than a guess.

My buddy (member king6772) guessed $4500 a piece. I bet they end up costing right between your guess & his.

I agree with over $3,000.Look at what Boyce sells a rebuilt Dana 60 for...$2,500 iirc.

I had looked at these before, then decided they were not for me, because I wanted a rig to drive on the street as well as take the trails.
Here is a place that has complete fronts for $1760 and rears for $1200.

I found another place that had complete disc brake axles for about $2700 for front or back, but I can't find the link right now.(All of these are Mog axles BTW)

Right, those are 404 axles, weak portal boxes with drum brakes. You'd want the bigger ones, as these are breaking under lightweight jeeps with SBC's.

In the last two weeks we have received an absolute flood of phone calls and emails regarding our portal wheel end. Please accept my apologies for not responding to each of you in a timely manner. It is not the way we operate and we are taking steps to assure that requests are answered quickly with the information you request.



A number of changes are being made to our website, www.motorsports.axletech.com, including addition of production pricing info, pictures from testing, and video from dynamometer testing. In the interim, I have attached our 2009 production price sheet that details pricing for Dane 60 axles and other axle models that will be released during 2009.



Attached are pictures of our portals on a Dynatrac Pro Rock 60. This is a test vehicle using earlier generation hardware. Production hardware has a number of improvements that are not shown here.



Some of you have asked about using our current portal on Dana 44 axles – in short, for a variety of reasons, we do not recommend it. The good news is that we will be launching a new development program shortly for a compact portal wheel end for lighter duty axles including Dana 44, Toyota, Land Rover, etc. If all goes well, you should see the fruits of our efforts at SEMA 2009.

AxleTech International Motorsports announces 2009 production pricing for its portal conversion system
for Dana 60 and other axles.
Each portal conversion kit features
• Four drive/steer wheel ends with a direct interface to a Dana 60 kingpin inner “C” (high strength
inner “C” recommended) for the four wheel steering configuration
• Two drive/steer wheel ends with a direct interface to a Dana 60 kingpin inner “C” (high strength

They're 6500 a set.....I take that to mean 2 hubs to do one axle.?

That`s what I`d think.A set should mean all you need,too.

They talk about other "sets" costing the same, leading me to believe that 6500 covers all 4 wheels, but I guess this is one of those things that qualify's for if you are worried about the price, you probably can't afford them, I would definately be in that catagory!!!

You guys are right, I read it again & it specifically says at the top of the price list that you get 4 drive/steer wheel ends....with brakes. I guess the first read through I was too worried about the price to take in all the details.

Not bad for all you get. Maybe I'll win the lotto this week.
