TF Air conditioner ideas

Besides all of commercially available systems (Hot Rod air, etc.) what have you all used for A/C? I have a pick a part that is local that has a pretty good selection and if I can make something work that may be cheaper, I'm for it.

I saw in here where someone used a heater/AC from an S-10 on a 1st series...

I have seen two trucks with OEM HVAC units scabbed onto the firewall. One was a AD series and the other was a Task Force.

Neither looked like an installation I would want on my ride. How they perform may be another matter completely.

How much it will save you should be tempered with what it will cost you upon resale. In my book it would probably be a deduct since I would have to tear it out and replace with an aftermarket set up.

The OEM air would cool better for sure. The problem is room. It will not fit under the dash, so it would have to be on the firewall. which as stated just don't look right. If money is the main reason, then the 1k for an aftermarket might or might not be worth it. I seen a 57 with a T/A clip, motor, radiator, and A/C heater in it. It was not pretty at all.

I have a Vintage Air unit that I am going to install. So far it looks like the fit is going to be okm every thing mounts up in the dash. Glove box is reduced to about 2" deep and the unit hangs about 3-4 " below the bottom lip of the dash on the passenger side. It does not affect passenger foot room or stock WS wiper. There is nothing on the firewall side except for the lines and obvious stuff like compressor, evaporator, etc. I don't care for the diffuser grilles that come with the unit and am probably going to make a center console and valence below the dash for nicer ones. I too have seen later unit grafted onto the firewall, they can work but take up a lot of room and you then have to deal with relocating the battery. I think because the newer trucks have wider firewalls you might have conflicts with the engine too. It seems like I have seen units that mount behind the seat for street rods that might work too.
