Need some tire opinions

Hey guys-

This weekend I stumbled on a free set of original style wheels. I already had the hubcaps in my garage. I am going to have them sand blasted and powder coated black.

My question is what type of tires do you guys think will work best? I have the original style 6 bolt axles and the truck gets some normal chore duty as you can see in the pics.

I am thinking I want to go with a 6.50R 16 a radial but like the originals, maybe with a white wall??... what you guys think? Anyone know of a good place besides Coker to buy them?

Re: Need some tire opinions

Hey Luke,

I would use a good modern radial. The LT215/85R16 would give a vintage type look, no whitewall though. You can mount them on a wheel as narrow as 5-1/2 inches. You could get some wide whites added. I don't know if the old wheels will work tubeless though but adding a tube won't hurt anything.

I like the Michelin LTX MS. But in the spirit of full disclosure I am a tire engineer for Michelin.

Good luck,

TR

Re: Need some tire opinions

I decided I would go with BFG Long Trail's 235/75/16 They are the appropriate size and have had good luck with them in the past. They are also not too wild that they look out of place on the truck. The wheels are originals I had sandblasted and powder coated satin black. The moons and rings are original style repro's from Classicparts.com. I am very happy with the quality of them.

The truck looks like it should now with out the 15" 60's or 70's style wheels and hubcaps on it.

Re: Need some tire opinions

They look great !!! Powder Coat was the way to go.. Good and durable
I'm so glad you didn't do the white wall idea. The solid black walls work perfect with the rest of your truck.

Trucks awesome now. Great Job

Re: Need some tire opinions

So based on this thread it appears running radials on original wheels (tubeless) will not pose any problems. Is this correct?

Thanks

Thats been an issue of debate on here before. However, I am running LT215-85-r16 on original rims using radial tubes.

Re: Need some tire opinions

I think I may just try to secure a set of newer wheels to bolt up with radial tires. I've read quite a bit about a variety of other wheels fitting my 8x6.5" bolt pattern so I'll see what I can find.
