need help just bought a 66 chevy fleetside

I just bought my uncle's 66 chevy fleetside and I need help with info.the truck has been in the family for years.I know some history on the truck.the truck has a 230 with a three on the tree. i want to change it to a 5 speed and keep the 230. my first question is what transmission will bolt to the 230 and how much modifications do i have to do. second it's missing the tranny crossmember,so i need to what years will fit. it's going to be a challenge to get it back in shape, but i love a good challenge. if you can help it will be much appreciated. thanks

The 230 has the same bellhousing bolt pattern as a smallblock chevy. So most chevy transmisions will work. I wish my 305 V-6 had the same bellhousing pattern I would put my richmond six-speed behind it!!!

The bellhousing bolt pattern is the same, but it's not a plug-and-play job. I've got a S-10 5 speed I'm planning on putting in my 64 soon. I think this thread explains it, but you'll need the S-10 tailshaft and shifter if you use a Camaro 5 speed because of the difference in the position of the shifter. You can do a forum search for T5 transmissions for other articles.
And, welcome to the board. Always nice to have another 60-66 guy here.

Welcome to the board

I would go with a T5. That should hold up with no problem behind a 230, and give you a mpg boost.
