confused

painted under the hood today, went to get new spark plugs for my 66,

originally i was told this was a 250, but 230 is stamped on the block, did they just use the same block and no different stamp?

next i had to run to the store several times to get the right plug, didnt have a good one to show them, i finally found the right one myself and it says it belongs to a 250 from a 1970-75 c10

i thought the engine was number matching, but i guess he mightve switched the head?

is there a benefit to this? im so lost with this engine, i wish PO would tell you everything theyve done to the truck, can anyone help?

Re: confused

the po of my truck thought it was a 283 because that's what the vin would have called for. and he thought that it was all original the block is a 350, and it's sitting on a 73+ frame....what happens when you buy a chevy from a ford guy. get a swingin deal though

Re: confused

Both engines can use the same spark plugs--just pick one and run it for awhile, then inspect them and adjust the heat range if you need to in your application. And convert to HEI!
The casting numbers may help, but both the 230 and 250 can use the same block numbers. There are many online sites that list the casting numbers, just google for them (inliners.org, etc)

If you have access to figure out the pistons--(a cheap borescope, or feel the piston top with a stick or penci)l---it is my understanding that the 230 used flat top pistons with valve reliefs (eyebrow marks), wherease the 250 and 292 had dished out pistons with D-shaped concave dishes 1/3 inch deep.

hope this helps...otherwise, 230 or 250 are basically the same as far as any sparkplugs, timing, etc.

A man has to work so hard so that something of his personality stays alive. A tomcat has it so easy, he has only to spray and his presence is there for years on rainy days.

Re: confused

Looks good! I thought the first pic was the "after". I was like- omg, get some masking tape! But hey- you did a great job. Good selection of colors, too.

I'm working on the same thing for my truck right now, and I, too, don't know if it's either a 230 or 250. I was told by someone who knows what they're talking about that it was a 250, but my pistons have eyebrows and not dishes. Crazy.
