box or plate for shortened frame

I just shortened my frame using the step method and was wondering if I should weld a plate to the backside or if I should box the frame in? Also what size metal for the plate or box? Thanks

I got some from ECE & they fit. I did this conversion & used 3/16" for fish plate & boxing.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Re: box or plate for shortened frame

3/16 and just plating is fine unless you want a fully boxed frame

Re: box or plate for shortened frame

Its stronger to fish plate the directly over the joint than to box the frame. If the weld cracks the crack will run into the plate and stop instead of continuing all the way through. Here is a pic of a 66 frame i shortened to a SB wheelbase.
